Augusta Civic Center could be mass vaccination site
City officials are in talks with state and MaineGeneral officials about using the Augusta Civic Center as the site of public COVID-19 vaccination clinics, but no agreement has been reached to move forward.

The Augusta Civic Center, seen here in April 2020, could potentially be the site of a mass vaccination clinic. State, city and health officials have been considering whether establishing a a vaccination clinic would impact the Legislature’s ability to meet there. City officials have noted the facility can easily accommodate both uses.

Augusta Council confirms city’s new fire chief
Dave Groder, 54, of Oakland, a three-decade Augusta firefighter, confirmed as chief of department Thursday.

AUGUSTA City councilors made Dave Groder the city’s new fire chief in a unanimous vote Thursday.
Groder, who most recently served as acting chief and deputy chief of the department, grew up wanting to be a firefighter like his dad Alfred was in Skowhegan. He said becoming fire chief fulfills a lifelong goal. He’s been a firefighter in Augusta since 1988.
“That 33 years is a commitment; 33 years is a quest to climb up through the ranks and get to the top of the ladder, so to speak. I know you’re very proud of that; you should be,” Mayor David Rollins said of Groder becoming chief after 33 years as a firefighter in Augusta. ....

AUGUSTA A veteran firefighter who has most recently served as Augusta’s acting and deputy chief is the city manager’s choice to lead the fire department.
Dave Groder grew up wanting to be a firefighter, like his dad Alfred was in Skowhegan. Now, he has been appointed as Augusta’s fire chief by City Manager William Bridgeo, an appointment subject to confirmation by the City Council on Thursday. ....

City of Augusta Names David Groder New Fire Chief
According to the Kennebec Journal, there will be a new Chief in town for the Augusta Fire Department. Though this chief certainly new to the Augusta Fire Department. Dave Groder has been serving as the city s Deputy Chief for quite sometime and has been chosen by Augusta s city manager to take over as chief.
Dave always knew he wanted to be a firefighter. In fact, his father, Alfred, was a firefighter for Skowhegan. Dave recalled memories of being a kid when his dad worked for the department, “This has been my goal since the beginning, even as a little kid, growing up in the fire service with my dad. As a child, when a call went out I used to run to the fire station and watch the trucks when they left.” ....

Recruiting retailers is a competitive game. And one that generally plays out best in a face-to-face environment.
But coronavirus put an end to all that. No longer could the big symbol and franchise groups rely on trade shows, store visits and face-to-face meetings to tempt new members. Suddenly, operators had to adapt their recruitment plans to an online world.
Replacing the power of annual trade shows, which typically attract thousands of visitors, was no mean feat. Yet nine of the leading 14 fascias managed to hold onto or expand their numbers last year.
The most impressive figures came in from Booker’s Premier and Parfetts Go Local – both of which grew store numbers by 150 – while Londis was also up by more than 100 stores. Meanwhile, Nisa signed up 73 more stores in 2020 than it did the previous year despite the challenges created by the pandemic. ....
