Cromarty Firth hydrogen plant to boost whisky distillers

Picture Port of Cromarty Firth
HYDROGEN fuel produced in the Cromarty Firth area could help local whisky distillers to reduce their carbon emissions under plans that have generated interest among industry giants.
A feasibility study backed by Glenmorangie, Whyte & Mackay and Diageo found that the Cromarty Firth area would be the ideal place in which to develop a facility for the production of so-called green hydrogen.
This involves using electrolysis to separate hydrogen from oxygen, which is the other element of water.
The study findings highlight the advantages offered by an area in which it should be relatively easy to access supplies of renewable energy to power an electrolyser and in which there is a deep water port.

Boost for Aberdeenshire carbon capture and storage project

Acorn is supported by oil giant Shell and North Sea-focused Harbour Energy.
In March Storrega won backing from Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC and Japanese industrial giant Misui, who joined Australian investment bank Macquarie on the shareholder list.
The investors hope the Acorn project will help develop a model that could be rolled out around the world.
Mr Buchanan said Storrega’s work was positioning the UK as a global leader in CCS solutions.
His experience could be very valuable as Storrega looks to establish itself as a leader in a market that is in its infancy. The Government is still developing the business model for CCS. This is expected to include the introduction of a carbon pricing mechanism that will encourage users to pay Acorn to handle their carbon dioxide emissions.

Has case for storing carbon in depleted North Sea oil fields been made?

AFTER the firm leading Scotland’s flagship Acorn carbon capture and storage project made a significant advance last week excitement is growing about the potential of the scheme but probably not by enough to silence doubters.
The Acorn scheme is expected to involve using depleted North Sea oil and gas fields to store carbon dioxide to help clean up what are seen as hard to decarbonise industries and support the development of clean hydrogen fuel.
Champions reckon such projects could play a big part in the fight against climate change and hold out the prospect that they could generate or support thousands of jobs across the supply chain.
