The Motor Trade Association (MTA) is concerned the Government’s approach to immigration will impact on road safety.
“A long-running skill shortage in the automotive sector threatens vehicle inspection and the industry’s capacity to train for the future,” says MTA’s Advocacy and Strategy Manager Greig Epps.
“The current policy equates skill level with salary level and this is wrong,” Epps says.

Government's approach to immigration will impact on road
safety.
“A long-running skill shortage in the
automotive sector threatens vehicle inspection and the
industry's capacity to train for the future," says MTA’s
Advocacy and Strategy Manager Greig Epps.

policy equates skill level with salary level and this is
wrong,” Epps says.

vastly different amounts, but there's not many doctors who
can fix your transmission as well as your
fracture."

Waka Kotahi will offer easier ride for vehicle inspectors over WOFs - MTA

Transport agency audits have financially crippled some businesses, RNZ has been told.

The inspectors in recent meetings with Waka Kotahi told it about audits they feel are inconsistent and unfair.
"NZTA have caused many of us huge losses - financially crippling our businesses, causing ongoing extreme stress and mental health issues," one industry player told RNZ on condition of anonymity.
"Our reputations are down the drain and we are not sure we if can ever claw our way back."
The agency was found badly wanting in 2018 in how it regulated road safety and, forced by several critical government reviews, it stepped up audits.

Vehicle factors, especially brakes and tyres, are increasingly a contributing factor to fatal crashes on New Zealand roads.
This is one of the key findings of the Motor Trade Association’s recent analysis of information in the Government’s Crash Analysis System on fatal crashes between 2011 and 2019.
“Vehicle factors that contribute to fatalities are on the rise, even as the road toll trends down,” said MTA’s Advocacy and Strategy Manager Greig Epps.
