Summer concert series celebrates anniversary

James Jones remembers the first-ever summer summer concert of the Newton Mid-Kansas Symphony Orchestra at the time it was part of a festival, called the Harvey Festival.
I got the idea from the railroad restaurant and the name of the county and the Judy Garland Movie [The Harvey Girls, 1946], Jones said.
It was started by Jones and Don Kerhberg, former music professor at Bethel College as something fun to do in the summer.
There was also a need for some summer music, it worked out very well, Jones said. . I have had a lot of fun. I have played them all on clarinet. I have played all of them, and I got to play what I wanted. ....

Shipley Arts Festival begins

Andrew Bernardi, violinist and director of the Shipley Arts Festival, said: “This special concert is a double celebration, as for the first time in many months, the Bernardi Music Group will be performing side by side with the String Academy.
“In this beautiful, historic church, the highly talented youth orchestra will create the most delightful music alongside professional musicians, as they return once again to where the vision for the festival started 21 years ago.
“The programme includes thanks to the late composer and performer John Ireland who rests in the Shipley church grounds. His compositions were inspired by the Sussex communities and stunning countryside vistas surrounding the church, providing the festival with passion and inspiration for over two decades. ....

Tickets are now on sale at http://bernardimusicgroup.comThe programme begins with Music Celebrating 21 years on Sunday, May 2, at Shipley Parish Church at 8.30pm when the Bernardi Music Group with the String Academy will perform Holst St Paul’s Suite; John Ireland Toccata; and Vivaldi Concerto for Four Violins movement 1 in D major.
As Andrew says, it’s a chance to see the Bernardi Music Group perform side by side with the String Academy “as we celebrate and launch our 21st anniversary year in this beautiful and historic church.
