The BBC's Sarah Smith told Andrew Marr this morning the recent SNP leadership crisis has dented Nicola Sturgeon's hopes for independence. Ms Smith said the SNP's basis for a second independence referendum - an overwhelming majority of MSPs at Holyrood - was slipping away. This comes as two polls, carried out after Nicola Sturgeon and Alex Salmond gave evidence to the Holyrood inquiry into the investigation of the former first minister, showed a drop in support for both the SNP and independence.

Nicola Sturgeon on brink as 'independence will kill socialism' as it did in Slovakia | UK | News

He concluded in his piece for CapX: "It is that subsidy that allows Holyrood to maintain a much more socialist economic model than would be the case if Scotland had to fend for itself.
"The English are putting up with Scottish dependence and periodic hissy fits because of a deep emotional commitment to the Union by a succession of British leaders.
"That is an emotion I fully share, yet I also believe that independence is exactly what Scotland needs in order to rid the birthplace of Adam Smith of socialism once and for all – after a brutal but necessary learning experience, like Slovakia’s."

Prime Minister Boris Johnson's success in securing Brexit at the end of last month raised significant challenges for Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and her independence bid. There are still questions over which currency an independent Scotland would use, its significant deficit and the difficulties of having a hard border with the rest of the UK, which would impact 60 percent of Scotland’s trade. Moreover, Scotland would likely not be able to obtain concessions the UK had while within the EU, such as less onerous VAT rules or exemption from the Schengen Agreement.

Chief Executive Officer of the Scottish Fishermen's Federation Elspeth Macdonald told Express.co.uk many fishermen who campaigned for Brexit in Scotland would be opposed to the First Minister forcing their industry to comply with the EU's CFP rules again. She said: "We have to think about the fact that the fishing industry is quite diverse, so there would be someone in the industry that probably would be worried about that.
