Warning from authorities: Stay off the ice

One of the results of the recent subzero temperatures is that many area lakes and ponds have iced over. But authorities are warning adults and children that the ice is too dangerous to walk on.

tonight's turnout. joining us from the weather center. what kind of conditions are we talking about right now? >> were talking about temperatures stay subzero. des moines hit zero for the first time since saturday afternoon. much is still hitting subzero. then you factor in wind chill and you have values 20-35 degrees below zero. incredibly cold. yes. i will gets cold but not this cold. this is the departure from normal. about 30 degrees older than average for this time of year in iowa. wind chill warnings are in effect. as a go through the evening, we will continue to find wind chills get to dangerous levels. frostbite time is in 20 minutes or less and you could be looking at symptoms of hypothermia. shivering, difficulty speaking. stiff muscles are things that people need to look out for. we will continue to find temperatures dipping. we are looking at 5-10 degrees

minus 10 as you are waking up on tuesday morning. the cold air gets as far south as texas, we're looking at temperatures in the single digits and teens for places like there is, austin waking up to the teens by tuesday and wednesday mornings. so as this continues to spill south, it will impact most americans looking at 80% of the lower 48 with temperatures below freezing by the time we get to tuesday, almost 20 of us subzero. we're looking at records falling, maybe 250 or more records both daytime cold highs and overnight low temperatures that could fall as a result of this arctic invasion. now, this is coming kind of the first of the season. a lot of these places especially in the upper midwest are in the midst of the warmest winter on record. all of the red dots there, that is the difference between weather and climate, this is really the first cold snap, but the trend since december 1 has been a warm one.

at just negative 4 degrees in des moines on monday. i can't even imagine what that feels like. elisa rafah is in the wenter center. i mean, that is brutal cold. that is like frostbite weather. >> we're talking in minutes, frostbite conditions. so very dangerous and life-threatening. this is a look at the current temperatures right now in iowa. they're all subzero. minus 9 right now in des moines. minus 5 in mason city. sioux city, 10 degrees below zero. windchills are 20 to 30 below zero. windchill warnings in effect for most of the state through tuesday as we continue with this dangerous cold, as we go through the next couple days. and everybody is mentioning, yeah, iowa is used to cold, but minus 4 degrees in des moines is 30 degrees below average. this is not normal. yes, iowa gets cold in winter, but not this cold. temperatures across the state will be about 30 degrees below average.

when you look at the frostbite conditions you're looking at frostbite in 20 minutes or less. monday evening when all of these caucus events are happening you're looking at windchill values as cold as 25 to 35 below zero with frostbite in 30 minutes or less. here's a look at some of the caucus temperatures over the last couple years. most of them in the 30s and 40s. 2004 sticks out, 16 degrees. but that high on monday will only be minus 4. >> that is brutal. i know what frostbite is. i have had that before on my feet, that isn't good, and it wasn't in temperatures that low. what about for the rest of the country? >> it's not just iowa. this arctic air is spreading as far south as the mexican border. you can see the windchill alerts from canada to mexico, where in the heart of the winter warning you could have windchills as cold as 45 degrees below zero. these are the morning temperatures for the northern plains. all subzero through tuesday morning. they might not break zero degrees until wednesday.
