MISSOULA — On top of the COVID-19 pandemic, it may seem like there’s been lots of violence in the news lately. Here in Missoula County, that’s because there has been -- more than in years past.
2020 was a challenging year, bringing uncertainty, racial injustice, and financial insecurity and health concerns due to COVID-19 – and in Missoula County, our criminal justice system saw impacts.
“We had a huge spike in violent crime, particularly in family-related violent crime,” said Missoula County Attorney Kirsten Pabst.

MISSOULA — Christopher Lance Newrider of Missoula, charged with shooting a man in the head in an apartment complex parking lot, says he's not guilty.
Newrider has been charged with one count of deliberate homicide for the shooting death of 33-year-old Sundance Hernandez.
Newrider appeared before Missoula District Judge Robert Deschamps for his arraignment Tuesday afternoon and entered a not guilty plea to a charge of deliberate homicide.
Court documents detail what happened the day of the fatal shooting on December 8 in the parking lot of the Creekside apartments on East Broadway.

Deputy County Attorney Jordan Kilby was the prosecutor and explained the proceedings.
“Christopher Newrider was charged with deliberate homicide for the death of Sundance Hernandez,” said Kilby. “He is alleged to have shot Sundance on December 8 at the Creekside apartments in the parking lot in Missoula. Yesterday was Christopher's arraignment, so he came in and pled not guilty. The judge went through some of his rights. He said he understood those rights and then we set February 16
th for an omnibus hearing.”
According to court documents, Newrider and Hernandez knew each other in prison. There was a conversation about some televisions that Newrider was holding for a mutual friend, Fred Lawrence, and when Hernandez arrived with Lawrence at the Creekside Apartments, Hernandez exited the vehicle to speak with Newrider.

Missoula Police arrested murder suspect Christopher Newrider without incident at approximately 4:30 on Wednesday afternoon.
Public Information Officer Travis Welsh said Newrider was taken into custody and is being charged with deliberate homicide in the death of Sundance Hernandez.
Investigators returned to the Creekside Apartments on Wednesday where Newrider was taken into custody.
Earlier in the day, a weapon was located in the area where Newrider was last seen near the river. The weapon was found by a K-9 team from the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office.
Welsh said the Missoula Police Department is not looking for any other suspects in the case and that there is no further threat to the public, however the investigation is ongoing.
