Hospitals to Use 'Gender-Inclusive' Language Like 'Chestfeeding' to Accommodate Trans Patients

The hospitals will also do away with the exclusive use of binary terms like “mother and father.” Instead, staffers will call the birthing mother’s partner “parent,” “co-parent,” or “second biological parent.”
In a statement on the issue, the NHS Trust said the shift is part of its “journey towards providing gender-inclusive care for everybody.”
We are on a journey towards gender inclusive care for everybody during pregnancy, birth and afterwards. This journey is led by members of the trans and non-binary community. We are at the beginning of this process, which will continue over the next few years.
Midwives believe pregnancy and birth are normal, healthy parts of life. The midwife’s role is to support a pregnant person’s journey through each stage of pregnancy, birth, and the early days with their new baby. Midwives believe that you know what is best for you and your baby, and will work together with you to ensure your experience of pregnancy and birth is safe and positive.

U.K. Hospitals Push 'Trans-Friendly' Language: Chest-Feeding, Birthing Parent, Human Milk

The Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust in England announced on Feb. 8 that they were instructing nurses and midwives to use “gender inclusive language” in their maternity wards, with such terms as chest-feeding instead of breast-feeding, birthing parent instead of mother, and human milk instead of breast milk.

U.K. hospital advises midwives to stop using gender-specific terms to be more inclusive

TORONTO --
A hospital in the United Kingdom has issued new guidelines for midwives asking they stop using terms such as "breastfeeding" and "breast milk" to be more inclusive of transgender and non-binary people.
In a statement posted to its website, the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals (BSUH) said it is encouraging staff to use phrases including "birthing parents" and "human milk" rather than using language that only refers to women and mothers.
According to the new policy, the hospital says "maternity care" should also be called "perinatal services."
"At BSUH we acknowledge the additional challenges that gender identity can have on pregnancy, birth and infant feeding. We recognise the importance of providing inclusive, respectful perinatal care to all pregnant people and their families," BSUH said in the statement.

A U.K. hospital has issued new guidelines encouraging midwives to stop using terms such as "breastfeeding" and "breast milk" in an effort to be more inclusive of transgender and nonbinary people.
The Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust (BSUH), a regional teaching hospital working across two sites, is urging staff to use phrases such as "birthing parents" and "human milk" instead of language that addresses only women.
"At BSUH we acknowledge the additional challenges that gender identity can have on pregnancy, birth and infant feeding. We recognize the importance of providing inclusive, respectful perinatal care to all pregnant people and their families," BSUH said in a statement published on its website in January.
