YOURSAY | How much did Bank Negara know about the 1MDB transactions?

The Wakandan: Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, your explanation does not wash and I am not prejudiced against you.
I think it made sense that you chose Zeti Akhtar Aziz because she was a well-known banker. That’s a good reason for her to be one of the Council of Eminent Persons (CEP).
Similarly, you got economist Jomo Kwame Sundaram, former finance minister Daim Zainuddin and tycoon Robert Kuok in the team, all having some outstanding economic background.
But you are an intelligent person. The fact that Zeti did not act against then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak even though she allegedly knew the irregularities, would immediately disqualify her to be a member of CEP, which was an important post that you created to advise you and the nation.

KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd’s parent company BIMB Holdings Bhd
is on track to complete its restructuring in August and will reveal details on its five-year post-restructuring plan on Wednesday.
"Further updates on the restructuring status, the post-restructuring plan and the way forward for the financial services group will be revealed next week on April 21,” Bank Islam chief executive officer Mohd Muazzam Mohamed told reporters on the sidelines of the bank's AMAL Ihtimam Ramadan Bank Islam 2021 programme today.
To recap, BIMB Holdings is in the midst of a restructuring exercise that will see Bank Islam taking over its Main Market listing status.

PETALING JAYA: After courting flak over a viral video on social media, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri has explained that his trip to Saudi Arabia was fully sponsored by the Muslim World League.
In a series of tweets on Tuesday (April 13), Zulkifli also refuted allegations that he sat on a private jet, saying that he took the commercial flight by Saudi Airlines.
"God-willing, many have asked me before making any assumptions. I pray that the current Ramadan will be able to educate our souls in the direction that is blessed by Him.

BIMB to place out 220 million new shares, raising close to RM800m fresh capital — source

KUALA LUMPUR (April 13): BIMB Holdings Bhd, which owns Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd, is proposing a share placement of about 220 million new shares to raise close to RM800 million fresh capital, according to a source familiar with the fundraising exercise.
The new shares are said to be priced in the range of RM3.55 to RM3.60, the source said. The share placement will be at a discount over the last traded price of RM3.94.
BIMB’s share price drifted lower over the past two weeks, dropping from this year’s peak of RM4.40 in late March.
The share placement is part of the financial group’s restructuring exercise, which will ultimately lead to Bank Islam taking over the listing status of BIMB.

'New model needed top rev up bumiputera economy', says academic

KUALA LUMPUR (April 12): Nearly 64 years after attaining independence, Malaysia’s bumiputera agenda has yet to bear the desired results.
This is because poverty continues to haunt the biggest component of the nation’s population while bumiputera corporate equity ownership is still far below the government’s 30% target.
According to media reports, the incidence of poverty among the bumiputera stood at 7.2 percent as of 2019, compared with 1.4% (Chinese) and 4.8% (Indians).
As for bumiputera equity ownership, it stood at 16.2% in 2020 compared with 23% in 2011 and 19.3% in 1990.
Addressing the widening economic disparity may be a huge challenge for the government as Malaysia readies itself to face the post-COVID-19 era because the pandemic has had detrimental effects on bumiputera economy and incomes.

How HR leader Rina Sarif is giving women a platform to realise their potential: THrivingWomen

Published: 05 April 2021
Having seen many women over the course of her career unable to rise up the ranks due to various factors, Rina Sarif, Chief Human Capital Officer, Lembaga Tabung Haji, has taken a stand. In this exclusive, Aditi Sharma Kalra finds out how she launched THrivingWomen, a platform to create awareness around the reality of women in leadership - from cancer fighters to boardroom aspirants, all are welcome.
Q What was the idea and passion that gave birth to THrivingWomen?
In my career in human capital, I have observed many women do not dare to take up the challenge and rise up the ranks due to many factors. Women’s reality of work-life integration has proved to be multifaceted and involves juggling competing priorities. This requires women to find equilibrium between work, health and non-work roles. Or perhaps a balance or equilibrium does not exist! Understanding these hard-wired realities, this platform was created. It is to provide an enabled-system for women to better manage their work performance and personal matters, especially those who are challenged by critical health issues such as cancer, among others.

As more state governors embrace the HSS for its econometrical attraction, the North East launching of the Hajj Savings Scheme took place yesterday in Bauchi.
Taking a cue from Malaysia where the Tabung Haji boasts of deposits to the tune of RM73.86 billion as at June 2020,with the year’s profit after Zakat standing at RM1.55 billion despite Covid-19 pandemic. It is believed that the Nigerian version holds even greater prospects. If Malaysia with only about 30,000 slots allocation is able to reap the RM1.55 billion yields after investment, Nigeria with 95,000 is projected to triple its returns by the time more intending pilgrims subscribe to scheme.

YOURSAY | Dog-whistle politics - DAP blamed again
Modified12 Mar 2021, 1:24 am
BusinessFirst: I am really tired of this monotonous anti-DAP rhetoric (this time it’s in the form of Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan calling those wanting to weaken Perikatan Nasional [PN] agents of DAP).
It seems like in lieu of policy or ideas which is perhaps beyond these so-called elites, the lazy way is just to name call, tell lies, defame, and when all else fails, play the race and religion cards which is summed up by one word - "DAP".
It does not matter that the DAP is not the cause for 1MDB, the failures of MAS (multiple times) and other government-linked companies, Tabung Haji and Felda scandals, Mara overpriced hotels, condos for cows, people dying in prison/remand or falling out of windows when they are interviewed by the MACC.
