As more and more Indians get connected to the net, online propaganda and political messaging have never appeared as important as it does today. Nowhere is this more evident than Tamil Nadu, where political parties have spent at least ₹33 crore on Google ads. In past state elections in Maharashtra (2019) and Delhi (2020), such ads were worth less than ₹5 crore, a Mint analysis of Google ads data shows.

By Express News Service
CHENNAI: April 6, 2021 might be the beginning of a new chapter in Tamil Nadu’s political history. Tuesday’s polls might not just decide the course of the next five years, but the decades ahead. The electorate of the State has been deprived of its trusted choices of M Karunanidhi and J Jayalalithaa, and the popular choice is now between DMK’s MK Stalin and AIADMK’s Edappadi K Palaniswami.

NAMAKKAL: The days of cash-for-votes being an underhanded, hush-hush affair seem to be far behind. On Monday, a few residents of Pattanam village in Rasipuram Assembly constituency staged a road roko, brazenly demanding money from political parties in return for their votes.
The protesters parked their two-wheelers across the road to block traffic, and raised slogans questioning why they had not received a single rupee from the parties yet. “With just a few hours left for the polls, political parties are refusing to give us money. But other people in and around the village got Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 per vote,” they said. The protest shocked many as the Election Commission of India has been raising awareness against taking bribes for votes.

Tamil Nadu Polls: Red or Green, who will sweep Delta clean?- The New Indian Express

TIRUCHY: If the Chief Minister’s carefully constructed ‘farmer’ image finds takers among voters, it would make the Delta region easily winnable for the ruling AIADMK. But, if the Opposition’s campaign against the three contentious farm laws and the continuing farmers’ protest at Delhi borders raises concerns among farmers, it would then become a closely-watched battle. While the AIADMK candidates emphasised on the pro-agriculture measures taken by Palaniswami such as Kudimaramathu works, declaration of the Delta region as a Protected Zone, waiver of crop loans, the DMK speakers countered it by listing the ill-effects of farm laws, the support AIADMK MPs extended to it in the Parliament, improper execution of loan waiver, and the threat posed by the Electricity (amendment) Bill to free power supply.

A total of 3,998 candidates have taken position after high-octane political campaigning reached a heady crescendo during the last few days before one of the most riveting poll battles in the history of Tamil Nadu, scheduled for today. They will be vying for the preference of 3,19,39,112 women, 3,09,23,651 men and 7,192 transgender people to be elected across 234 constituencies to the 16th Legislative Assembly. For AIADMK’s Edappadi K Palaniswami and the DMK’s M K Stalin, it’s a do-or-die battle. Palaniswami’s last-minute announcements of 10.5% Vanniyar quota and 7.5% reservation for government school students in NEET as also a slew of welfare programmes are vote catchers.

BJP's poll-plank in Tamil Nadu devoid of hardcore Hindu politics unlike West Bengal, Kerala- The New Indian Express

CHENNAI: BJP’s campaign recipe in Tamil Nadu, compared to West Bengal, Kerala, has been slightly different.
The saffron party which is known to evoke Hindu sentiments and issues relating to temple and cow politics has somehow kept those topics in low key in this State during campaigns.
In fact, just like their principal ally AIADMK, the BJP too has continued its attack on DMK mainly on dynastic politics, stance on women issues, rowdy-rule while discourses regarding religion have been confined to social media campaigns and media advertisements.
While the BJP raked up the Sabarimala issue as a poll plank in Kerala, terming that the LDF “crushed” the sentiments of Hindu devotees in the whole of South India, in West Bengal, senior BJP leaders have openly criticized CM Mamata Banerjee as a “Muslim appeaser”.

Tamil Nadu elections: Split votes and the 'independent' conundrum- The New Indian Express

Express News Service
CHENNAI: The constitutional right for individuals to contest in elections is empowering. However, in many cases, independent candidates are caught between exercising that right and being used as pawns by big political parties to engineer vote splits.
In 2016, out of the 134 seats won by AIADMK, victory margins in 32 seats for the party were less than three per cent, and it was less than five per cent in 50 seats.
In many of these constituencies, a few independent candidates who are namesakes have engineered vote split by confusing voters and have altogether polled more votes than the losing margin of runners-up.
