Corpn fast-tracks encroachment eviction drive to beautify lakes | Coimbatore News

COIMBATORE: Racing against time to complete the lake rejuvenation projects, the city corporation has fast-tracked the drive to evict encroachments along the waterbodies in its limits.
After removing seven small temples that were built encroaching the eastern bund of Muthannnakulam earlier this week, the civic body demolished about 76 houses close to Krishnampathy lake on Thursday.
The houses at Gokulam Colony at Pappanaickenputhur were there for years and the demolition exercise was launched after allotting alternative housing to the residents in tenements built by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board.
However, the residents resisted the move and demanded they be allowed to stay there. Officials held multiple rounds of talks, but in vain. Eventually, the officials disconnected the power supply and went ahead with the demolition, despite the people’s objection.

CHENNAI: The 1967 elections merely dethroned Congress, but the 1971 elections decimated it in Tamil Nadu, mainly due to the vertical split of the Congress into factions -- one led by Indira Gandhi and another led by a set of senior Congress leaders, including K Kamaraj. The elections were held under extraordinary circumstances due to changes at the national level. Indira Gandhi dissolved the Parliament to seek a fresh mandate for her to strengthen her hold.

People living along the Vaigai north bank petition Collector
Scores of residents of Thevar Nagar and Netaji Nagar in Vandiyur thronged the Collectorate here on Monday, seeking alternative housing accommodation as Public Works Department officials have proposed to evict people in about 300 dwelling units along the Vaigai bank.
Claiming that they had been living along the northern riverbank for nearly four decades, they said that it was former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran who had converted their thatched-roof huts into tiled-roof houses through Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board.

A few residents of Asthanayakkar Street in Singanallur, who submitted petition at the weekly grievances redress day on Monday, demanded better living condition. They said the absence of title deeds for the lands they lived on had denied a few other government benefits as well.
The locality had no drainage, drinking water, underground sewerage facility and the over-all environment was bad. After dusk, the residents had to bear the invasion of reptiles into their houses, the residents said and pointed out that their petition to the National Commission for Scheduled Castes had not yielded any favourable result.
