???1;The Omanawanui and Puriri Ridge tracks in the Waitakere Ranges of west Auckland reopened today
21 February 2021
The reopening enables trampers to once again hike from the Karamatura Valley through to Anawhata following the recently completed tracks linking Huia to Whatipu.
In 2018, Auckland Council made the decision to close the majority of the tracks to protect the region's kauri forests until mitigation work could be carried out.
Te Kawerau Iwi Holdings Director Edward Ashby says it allowed time to improve the recreational infrastructure and while also giving the forest time to heal.

The Ōmanawanui Track and the Puriri Ridge Track have also been upgraded with thousands of steps and hundreds of metres of boardwalk being installed.
A Māori name is also being introduced to the Hillary Trail.
Auckland Council said the 6km upgrade is a significant milestone in the reopening of the trail which will also be known as Te Ara Tūhura.
It reconnects a multi-day trail from the Karamatura Valley through to Anawhata.
The council closed many tracks in 2018, following a rāhui placed by iwi over the ngahere (forest) of the Waitākere Ranges.

Kauri dieback: More tracks in Waitākere Ranges to reopen following 2018 rāhui

It is a “significant milestone” in the reopening of the Te Ara Tahura/Hillary Trail, Auckland Council said.
It will mean people are able to hike from Karamatura Valley in Huia through to Anawhata, near Piha.
Auckland mayor Phil Goff said he was pleased to see the tracks reopen.
“Aucklanders and visitors love the Waitākere Ranges and West Auckland walking tracks,” Goff said.

“The tracks were closed to protect our iconic native kauri trees from dieback disease.”
A Natural Environment Targeted Rate had allowed $311 million worth of investment over a 10-year period to upgrade tracks, protect kauri and enable the ranges to be enjoyed by hikers again.

Te Kawerau ā Maki, in partnership with Auckland Council and a member of the original settler Bethells family, have finally acquired ancestral land at Te Henga/Bethells Beach in the Waitākere Ranges for the building of a new marae and ‘kāinga whakahirahira’ or settlement of significance.
Te Kawerau ā Maki have been without a formal marae and papakāinga since the mid-20
th century when their last remaining lands at Waiti (Te Henga) were alienated. The hunt for suitable land for a Te Kawerau marae goes back to the early 1990s, and negotiations over its transfer to the iwi go back to 2007 when the former Waitākere City Council acquired the land for this purpose.
