ONE of his most popular plays, Tennessee Williams’ “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof” was first produced on Broadway in 1955 to great acclaim. It won the Pulitzer Prize for drama and was made into a popular movie with Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman.
Set in the home of wealthy plantation owner, Big Daddy Pollitt, on the evening of his birthday, the play examines the relationships of the various family members, primarily that of Big Daddy’s son, Brick, and daughter-in-law, Maggie, whose marriage is in crisis.

THE ceiling fans will be whirring and the mint juleps will be on ice when Canberra REP kicks off for the year with “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”, Tennessee Williams’ self-declared favourite play.
“Cat” has achieved a level of popular fame from the film starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, only surpassed by “A Streetcar Named Desire”, starring Marlon Brando and Vivian Leigh, so it’s easily forgotten that it’s quintessentially theatrical – a series of bouts between strong-minded, loud-mouthed characters and those whose zest for life is weaker.

TENNESSEE Williamsâ famous play, âCat on a Hot Tin Roofâ, directed by Anne Somes, launches the Canberra REPâs 2021 season. A late summer sizzler set in rural Mississippi, the play was made even more famous by the 1958 film starring Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor as the disturbed Brick and his frustrated wife, Maggie the Cat.
