Frontiers | Integrating Multidisciplinary Observations in Vent Environments (IMOVE): Decadal Progress in Deep-Sea Observatories at Hydrothermal Vents

The unique ecosystems and biodiversity associated with mid-ocean ridge (MOR) hydrothermal vent systems contrast sharply with surrounding deep-sea habitats, however both may be increasingly threatened by anthropogenic activity (e.g., mining activities at massive sulphide deposits). Climate change can alter the deep-sea through increased bottom temperatures, loss of oxygen, and modifications to deep water circulation. Despite the potential of these profound impacts, the mechanisms enabling these systems and their ecosystems to persist, function and respond to oceanic, crustal, and anthropogenic forces remain poorly understood. This is due primarily to technological challenges and difficulties in accessing, observing and monitoring the deep-sea. In this context, the development of deep-sea observatories in the 2000s focused on understanding the coupling between sub-surface flow and oceanic and crustal conditions, and how they influence biological processes. Deep-sea observatories provide ....

Frontiers | Revisit the Sedimentary Stratigraphic Evolution and Environmental Changes on the Outer Shelf of the East China Sea Since MIS 5

The East China Sea (ECS) is featured by the broad continental shelf, huge terrigenous sediment input and striking river-sea interaction during the Quaternary. Despite the numerous studies, mostly on the delta, coastal and inner shelf areas, the late Quaternary stratigraphy and sedimentary environment on the mid-outer ECS shelf were poorly documented. In particular, it is still controversial in issues such as the recognition of marine transgression deposits in the interglacial period and the occurrence and ages of deposits in the glacial period. This study presents new data of high-resolution seismic reflection profiles and collective evidences from lithology, microfossil assemblages and geochronology of borehole SFK-1 on the ECS outer shelf, aiming to revisit the sedimentary stratigraphic evolution and environmental changes since the Marine Isotopic Stage 5 (MIS5). Sixty-one ages were obtained by radiocarbon and Optical Stimulation Luminescence (OSL), providing robust constraints on th ....

Frontiers | The Atacama Desert in Northern Chile as an Analog Model of Mars

The Atacama Desert is by far the driest and oldest desert on Earth, showing a unique combination of environmental extremes (extreme dryness, the highest UV radiation levels on Earth and highly saline and oxidizing soils), explaining why the Atacama has been largely investigated as a Mars analog model for almost twenty years. Based on the source and the amount of water available for life and its analogy with Mars, two ecosystems are of interest in the Atacama; its Coastal Range and the much drier hyperarid core, which we here review in detail. Members of the three domains of life have been found across these ecosystems living at the limit of habitability, suggesting the potential dry limits for each domain, and also unveiling the highly patchy distribution of microbial life in its most extreme regions. The through study of the Atacama have allowed to understand how life has adapted to its extreme conditions, the specific habitats that life occupies in each case, (thus suggesting the mos ....

A study by researchers at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Marine and Environmental Research of the University of Porto (CIIMAR) concluded that on five beaches in the north there was more waste than sargassum (a brown seaweed).
Speaking to the Lusa agency, Marcos Rubal, a researcher at the University of Porto centre, explained that initially the team s aim was to study sargassum, understand its ecological importance and how this resource, a result of the natural deposition of seaweed and algae on beaches, could be valued.
However, when they began to analyse this natural resource in five beaches of the North region - Praia de Moledo, Vila Praia de Âncora, Praia do Cabedelo, Praia de São Pedro de Paramos a ....
