>> it's a cult. >> its personality. and trump is a rorschach, he could be anything. he could be this, he could be that, people put their own stuff on trump. the thing about desantis that made me very nervous was his autocratic tendencies. he took over universities, the stuff he did in florida. one of the things that has been really heartening is that swing voters, and even republicans, don't love anti-trans candidates, and they don't love a lot of that vitriol. and that's been actually great. so we've seen in previous elections, those kind of candidates tend to lose. >> yeah, they tend to lose, and they tend to lose big, if you are not authentic. >> joe, earlier today, perhaps not a surprise, trump received the endorsement from north dakota governor doug burgum, who dropped out of the race back in december. and maybe this is a little bit senator marco rubio froml florida, you also have mike lee from utah, throwing their support behind trump. and in each one of those, perhaps for different reasons,

haley's poised to benefit e most from christie's absence in the race, with a vast majity of chrissy supporters, 65%, saying that haley is their second choice. notably, desantis is nobody second choice, when it comes to crazy supporters. make no mistake, trump has a commanding lead in the national polls. he remains the outright favorite for the republican nomination, but there are some factors that could work into kayleigh's favor that could give her a fighting chance as the race heads to her home state of south carolina in february. among those factors, lawsuits, criminal cases, outstanding constitutional questions, and erratic candidate with authoritarian tendencies who could end up in jail. a boost of momentum out of ottawa could help haley last long enough to be the candidate waiting in the wings, should something historic up and this race. joining me live from the ground in des moines, iowa, is nbc news correspondent, vaughn hillyard. also with us is henry cox, political columnist for the new republican. host of the podcast, space the nation. welcome to both of you.

oh, yeah. beautiful every one of you with that precious snowflake. happy tuesday, everyone. so we're less than two weeks into the new year and not much has changed for 2023. i'm still under 7% body fat. done. kill me. still writes at a fourth grade level. and the biggest threat on earth, big monster man. take this recent piece from axios which points to the former president as, quote, the risk that trumps all others. quote a second trump term would be far more radical than the first committed to stretching legal and governance boundaries and to pursuing retribution for the prosecutions he's been fighting since losing. trump's protectionist and isolationist tendencies would also nato while creating an opening for china as a global threat. >> he is unrivaled.

autocratic tendencies. they throw a firehose of you know what at the wall, and people can't keep up with it. what's your solution? >> so i've been writing about this ad nauseam, and i feel i'll keep writing about it. we keep saying it, but this is true, it is the most important election of our lifetime, right? this is the, do you want to have more elections election. how we cover it in the mainstream media is going to be hugely important. i think that's why i keep getting stuck on writing about it, because it is so important. you have a really good point, mika, the firehose of lies we've seen him do, town halls where you see him screaming at the moderator and saying lies, and, you know, it's just too much. it is a firehose, and you can't fact-check that in real time. but i do also think we don't want voters to miss things like these truth social posts which are so unhinged.

in how he views this election, in the case of the church shooting, he certainly considered that part of the work he wanted to do on healing the soul of the nation, bringing the country together. voters will decide how he's accomplished that in his first term. when you look at what they're trying to do, make issues of democracy, authoritarian tendencies and outright impulses of donald trump, they want to highlight that, they want to link it also to reproductive rights because they believe that is a part of the democratic process as well, and that donald trump was directly involved in the selections that changed the shape of the supreme court, that led to the overturning of roe v. wade. and so you'll see them starting out by choosing those places and those points of recent history as a way to argue that there's still more work to do in terms of bringing the country together, and democracy has to be tended and protected on an ongoing basis. so that's where it will start.
