Utah Healthcare Systems Feeling The Crunch Of New Delta Variant
COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in Utah are higher now than they were a year ago even though vaccines are widely available. The Delta variant is largely to blame, according to Utah Department of Health spokesperson Charla Haley. Increased cases due to the Delta variant mean more hospitalizations as well. Intensive care units around the state are on average more than 80% full. Emily Spivak, an infectious disease doctor at the University of Utah, said the university's hospital shut down a COVID unit earlier this year. Now, it’s unclear if they have the resources to open it again.

How Britney Spears’ Case Sheds Light On Disability Rights Issues In Utah
The #FreeBritney movement is putting a spotlight on disability rights issues in Utah. It comes as Spears heads to court to fight her conservatorship case, which gives her father control over many aspects of her life, like how she spends her money. Activist Heidi Pomerleau with Disabled Rights Action Committee in Utah said Spears’ case is shedding light on a situation that frequently occurs to people living with disabilities. “Disability right advocates have been working on this and shouting about this for so many years,” Pomerleau said. “What we need now is change at the federal level.”

Lee Challenger Builds Campaign Funds
Former state Rep. Becky Edwards, R-North Salt Lake, is doing a pretty good job fundraising so far for her campaign against Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah. About a month in, Edwards has about $466,000 in the bank, but more than half of that is her own money she’s loaned to her campaign. There’s still about a year to go before the Republican primary. Lee’s filing has not been uploaded yet to the Federal Election Commission website, but at the end of March, his campaign reported they had nearly $1 million in the bank. —

Some Good Wildfire News
Utah fire officials are encouraged by the season’s latest trend — recent wildfire activity has been light. In fact, there have been fewer fires in the past two weeks than during the same period in 2019 and 2020. There were 35 new starts last week, and all but three of them were contained within the first day. The Morgan Canyon Fire is currently the only large fire burning in the state at 509 acres and 60% containment. It started last month because of a fatal plane crash. People are still the leading cause for wildfires in Utah — making up 77% of starts. Abandoned campfires have recently become the top culprit. —

A new study found
outdoor recreation is the number one reason tech sector employees live and work in Utah. The research comes from The Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute and Utah Outdoor Partners, a non-profit focused on the business of outdoor recreation. They found that 79% of Utah transplants rated outdoor recreation the most important factor in their decision to move to the state — over career advancement opportunities and pay. 82% of Utah natives who left the state said they moved back for outdoor life — ahead of family and cost of living. This research complements a 2018 survey that looked at the importance of Utah’s outdoors and employee recruitment. —
