The Academy has begun its voting for the 93rd Oscars, and many films and performances are vying for spots in various categories. Nearly 10,000 members could cast their ballots by Wednesday, March 10, with nominations set to be announced on March 15.
This has been an unpredictable awards season, with few consensuses forming in the 23 categories. We may be in store for this most surprising and jaw-dropping set of nominations in quite years, with genres and languages breaking the fabric of conventional awards picks. Here are a few recommendations for consideration as ballots are filled out this weekend.

The 16th annual Final Draft Awards took place on Tuesday, March 2, during an online ceremony. Hosted by Final Draft president Shelly Mellot, the first female appointed in the 30-year history, many awards contenders in the writing categories were honored in both film and television.
While accepting the award, Sorkin said, “the Zeitgeist crashed into us” and that he had no idea how much about today “The Trial of the Chicago 7” would end up being. This was an added boost to his awards campaign after winning the Golden Globe last Sunday for best screenplay.

Named 2AM, the venue brings together a trio of considerable indie film players and boasts backing from one of the space’s most premium brands: A24.
More from Variety
The Oscar-winning studio behind titles like “Moonlight” and “Room,” as well as the TV hit “Euphoria,” has invested in the full-service company at an undisclosed share. 2AM will operate independently, insiders said, with no exclusive first look deal with the distributor.

How Lee Daniels' new movie (starring Andra Day) retells the singer's story for the BLM era - and brings Billie back to life

Director Lee Daniels was in the midst of wrapping up his latest movie —
The United States vs. Billie Holiday, which tells the story of the late, troubled jazz singer and how “Strange Fruit,” the anti-lynching protest song she introduced to the world, brought her both triumph and troubles — when he noticed an unsettling parallel. He suddenly got a firsthand look at just how timely his new film project was. “We were in the middle of editing and that [George Floyd’s death] happened,” he recalls. “People were sending me [protest] videos of people singing ‘Strange Fruit’ in the middle of the street. It was crazy.”

Only Four Out of the WGA Awards' 31 Nominees Are Women

Only Four Out of the WGA Awards' 31 Nominees Are Women

The awards season’s narrative has been the “year of the women,” as female filmmakers, screenwriters and artisans have been making strong cases for nominations at the Oscars in categories like best picture and director. The Writers Guild of America Awards, however, might have missed the memo, only nominating four women over two films: Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman” and Jena Friedman, Erica Rivinoja and Nina Pedrad, three co-writers from “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.”
In the three categories for original, adapted and documentary feature, 31 total screenwriters were nominated, four of which are women, and three come from the same feature film.

What makes a Black movie 'Black'?

What makes a Black movie 'Black'?

A new special edition of EW celebrates a century of Black Film — but first we had to decide what that meant.
What defines a Black movie?
For the earliest filmmakers of color, the answer was pretty simple: Movies featuring Black actors telling stories intended for Black audiences. Once known by all as "race films," they came first from pioneers such as William D. Foster, who, beginning in 1912, produced silent comic shorts that aimed to improve the representation of Black people — the films were slapstick but never buffoonish. Or Tressie Souders, among the first directors to make movies with a woman's vision. Or the prolific Oscar Micheaux, arguably our first indie auteur, who raised the funds, wrote the scripts, and directed some 40 pictures. They catered to an African-American population starved for positive, dignified images in an era when the most celebrated film was D.W. Griffith's 1915
