Don't believe The Pursuit of Love – not all aristocrats are bigots, buffoons and bounders

Don’t believe The Pursuit of Love – not all aristocrats are bigots, buffoons and bounders
Are the English upper classes an absurd alien race? The makers of The Pursuit of Love – and many more TV dramas – certainly seem to think so

Emily Mortimer’s production of The Pursuit of Love presented her with an interesting conundrum. She was not just bringing the eccentric aristocracy to the screen, she was adapting them from Nancy Mitford’s adaptation, so she was already two steps away. A series such as The Crown is easier to dissect since it is the fictionalisation of real life people – it makes no attempt at reality at all, but does the unforgivable thing of creating cooked up situations for real people to the point that a large number of viewers – and even documentary makers - believe it to be true.

Who would have guessed? (Then again, maybe it makes perfect sense after months of being starved of glamour and high jinks) – the aristocracy are now firmly back in fashion.
Granted, there was a flutter of interest around the time of Downton Abbey, but that was as much about Carson as Lady Mary, and you never wanted to go to their parties. What’s piqued our curiosity and electrified our tastebuds are the aristo class as portrayed in the BBC’s adaptation of The Pursuit Of Love: eccentric and decadent, bonkers and beautiful.

Meet the stranger-than-fiction family behind the BBC drama, who kept horses on the staircase and Nazis in the closet

When The Pursuit of Love came out in 1945, Evelyn Waugh noted in his diary: “Nancy has written a novel full of exquisite detail of Mitford family life”. Nancy Mitford never found a muse to match her own family. Even later, when she came to write historical biography, starting with her acclaimed Madame de Pompadour, she couldn’t help turning it into a breed of memoir: “I do love it... They were all exactly like ONE,” she wrote in a letter.

Baths, come-hither eyes, giggles and bedtime kisses: the semi-Sapphic portrayal of cousins Linda and Fanny seems ripe for the male gaze

It’s always a pleasure to see a TV show that hinges on female friendship – and, in theory, the new BBC adaptation of Nancy Mitford’s The Pursuit of Love starring Lily James should be a prime example. It centres on the bond between cousins Fanny (Emily Beecham) and Linda (James), who are brought up together, come out together (not like that – as debutantes), and compare notes on their subsequent marriages and life choices.

My unforgettable lunch at the poshest table in London – no, not the River Café

The Hurlingham Club – ‘like a Merchant Ivory film, 40 years on’ – proved an ideal spot to forget all about Covid

It is the poshest table in London, I’m telling you. Forget those chichi Mayfair restaurant terraces. Forget the River Café, which is sublime, yes, yes, but also where a piece of fish practically invisible to the human eye costs £900. At least I think it was a piece of fish. Could have been a tadpole. Forget those places. Last Friday, my friend Emma invited me for lunch at the Hurlingham Club.

Is The Pursuit Of Love the BBC's answer to Bridgerton?

Bridgerton will surely fall for BBC’s star-studded adaptation of
The Pursuit Of Love. Both shows are easy-to-watch period dramas that offer escapism and – on the surface, at least – a substantial dose of smut.
Bridgerton has been described variously as a “polite orgy,” “soft-core porn” and “horny as hell”, which is exactly why it went on to become Netflix’s most-watched show. And it seems that
The
Pursuit Of Love’s writer-director Emily Mortimer got the memo. The trailer projects a sexed-up, ultra-sparkly vision of interwar England, starring Andrew Scott, Lily James and Dominic West (yes, it was ground zero for
