The Truffle Hunters - Screening on the Rialto Channel

Deep in the forests of Piedmont, Italy, a handful of men, seventy or eighty years young, hunt for the rare and expensive white Alba truffle - which to date has resisted all of modern science's efforts at cultivation. The demand for white truffles increases year after year, even as the supply decreases. As a result of climate change, deforestation, and the lack of young people taking up the mantle, the truffle hunters' secrets are more coveted than ever. Nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.

A Look Inside the Magical, Sacred World of The Truffle Hunters

The Truffle Hunters
April 1, 2021
Considering the planning and shooting of The Truffle Hunters took years, it’s only fitting the roll-out of the film would have quite a journey. After premiering at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, Gregory Kershaw and Michael Dweck’s delightful, visually magnificent documentary exploring a storied, sacred tradition would go on to be selected for Cannes, Telluride, TIFF,
and NYFF––a rare feat for any film to achieve. After an awards-qualifying run last year, it’s now finally arriving in select theaters nationwide, including NYC’s Film Forum this weekend.
The Truffle Hunters explores this age-old tradition of culinary treasure-hunting and the clash of passion and commerce around such a specific way of life. Executive produced by Luca Guadagnino, it’s also far from your standard documentary in terms of the picturesque approach in which we meticulously enter this Northern Italy milieu.”

A delectable mix of foodie obsession, fabulous canines, precariously piquant European culture and aspirational connoisseurship infuses "The Truffle Hunters," a documentary that's as canny about stimulating the viewer's taste buds as it is shameless about plucking our heartstrings.
Directors Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw travel to northern Italy's Piedmont region to chronicle the peregrinations of a group of elderly men and their dogs, who for decades have harvested the delicate Alba truffle from the forest's mossy corners. It's a physically demanding job, and an economically marginal one, as their lumpish, dirt-covered discoveries make their way from ground to basket to middleman to market - and eventually to the most discerning kitchens in Italy's finest restaurants - gaining monetary value along the way.

The Truffle Hunters review: A treat for gourmets and dog lovers

Oh, to be a dog romping through the hills of Northern Italy in autumn. The clouds are swollen and gray, and the grass is damp and green, and the smell that wafts up as the rain mixes with the chemicals in the earth has to be overwhelming. Oh, the odors: of wet dirt, of dead leaves, of birds in the trees and rabbits in the bushes, of the wool sweater on the old man who hand-feeds you chunks of meat every night. You take off, furry little feet barely touching the ground as you run toward the deepest, dankest scent in the entire forest, the one you have to dig to really inhale. Some dogs get in trouble for ripping up the ground and getting their paws all muddy, but not you. The old man smiles and pats you on the head. You’ll have steak tonight.

It’s a very different landscape this week than it was a year ago, just before the pandemic forced cinemas to close around the country. Still, with New York cinemas cautiously reopening this week and many other markets determined to bring moviegoing back, the studios and indie distributors alike are bringing many of their long-delayed releases onto screens, albeit in an entirely new way.
For contrasting examples, look at how two of the majors are handling what were intended to be family film tentpoles: Paramount decided to bypass theaters entirely with “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run,” using the title to launch its new subscription service, Paramount Plus (audiences can also rent it, at a price of $19.99, for a limited time via PVOD platforms). Disney tested a similar approach with “Mulan” late last summer, and now unveils its latest animated princess movie, “Raya and the Last Dragon” — though that label disguises the many ways in which this one advances the formula — both in theaters and via Disney Plus (where it can be rented for a premium surcharge).

Celebrating a long cherished passion in a community that’s struggling to protect its fragile land and a way of life is more important now more than ever in a world that’s forever been changed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The group of select men who have been guided by a secret culture and training that’s been passed down through generations, as they hunt for the rare and expensive white Alba truffle, is highlighted in the new documentary, ‘The Truffle Hunters.’

The history of human gastronomy is full of mysteries. Who figured out that an oyster was something to eat? That fruit juice left sitting around for a while would get you drunk? That a kid would eat the middle of an Oreo first? I am now convinced that these imponderables pale in comparison to the question of the truffle. How did this subterranean fungus, the best specimens of which look like woebegone potatoes, come to be among the most prized and pricey of delicacies?

Looking Back at Oscars 2020 winners + Oscars 2021 Details

WENN.com
Way back when in early 2020, Hollywood––and everyone else––was enjoying its pre-pandemic innocence.
Early 2020 was an exciting entertainment awards season with the Golden Globes kicking things off on January 5th; then came the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards (BAFTA) on January 9th; The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards on Jan 19th; The 62nd Grammy Awards on January 26th; and ultimately, the awards season big finale: The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony on February 9th. Things were certainly good in the ‘Wood back then, but what we didn’t know at the time is that the 2020 Oscars would be one of the country’s last major entertainment events before lockdown began.

How the Directors of 'The Truffle Hunters' Captured a Vanishing World

Or the century before that.
A lone man and his dogs struggle up a steep hillside. In a long shot — so still it looks like a watercolor — all we see are man, dogs and woods. The hills are in the Piedmont region of Northern Italy. The man and the dogs are scavenging for the white Alba truffles counted among the most prized, and most expensive, of gastronomic delicacies.
Over the next hour and a half, Dweck and Kershaw draw us into the strange, secretive and often poignantly sad world of truffle hunters, the old men (they are all old, they are all men) who have found their meaning of life in the pursuit of this elusive white gold. And, like the dogs sliding down the muddy hillside in that opening scene, who see their world slowly slipping away.
