TGA: Death of woman after AstraZeneca vaccine an atypical case

TGA: Death of woman after AstraZeneca vaccine an atypical case 17/04/2021|5min
Head of the Therapeutic Goods Administration John Skerritt says the death of a 48-year-old woman which is likely linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine was an atypical case.
The New South Wales woman who had diabetes was taken to hospital with blood clots and a low platelet count four days after receiving the vaccine.
She was vaccinated prior to the updated health advice for Australians under 50 to wait until the Pfizer vaccine is available instead.
“The case was particularly complicated to make a call on because the lady had a number of underlying medical conditions,” he said.

TGA: No conclusive evidence of 'cause and effect' on AstraZeneca clotting issue

TGA: No conclusive evidence of ‘cause and effect’ on AstraZeneca clotting issue17/03/2021|8min
Head of the Therapeutic Goods Administration John Skerritt says there is currently no conclusive evidence of a “cause and effect” with the clotting issue surrounding the AstraZeneca vaccine.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Dr Skerritt responded to concerns which recently emerged after multiple European countries halted the distribution of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine over blood clotting concerns.
Dr Skerritt said the European Medicines Agency is “firm with us” despite the number of European countries which have paused the rollout of the vaccine.
“We’re obviously waiting to see if there’s any further information, but at this stage we don’t believe there’s conclusive evidence of cause and effect with the clotting issue.

'Weight of evidence' suggests AstraZeneca vaccine does not cause clotting: TGA head

'Weight of evidence' suggests AstraZeneca vaccine does not cause clotting: TGA head17/03/2021|5min
Head of the Therapeutic Goods Administration John Skerritt says reports of adverse events connected to the AstraZeneca vaccine are being taken seriously, but the “weight of evidence” suggests it does not cause blood clots.
“We take all adverse event reports seriously, and we’re working very closely with regulators and health authorities throughout the world,” he said.
“In fact, we were talking almost till midnight last night with about 18 of them.
“We’re going with the weight of evidence for the major countries that have used the most doses of that.

The intensity of the fire raised suspicions among arson and explosives squad detectives that it may have been deliberately lit, with police arresting Jenny Hayes, 46, in Airport West on Thursday morning.
A 46-year-old Airport West woman has been arrested after Abbey Forrest, 19, her partner Inderpal 'Indi' Sohal, 28, and their three-week-old baby daughter Ivy died in a house fire in Point Cook in the early hours of Wednesday.
She was later charged with three counts of murder plus arson causing death, and declined to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday night as her case was briefly mentioned.

'Safety evidence for the Pfizer vaccine is pretty thorough': TGA head

Head of the Therapeutic Goods Administration John Skerritt says while “the safety evidence is pretty thorough” for the Pfizer vaccine, the chance of negative side-effects does increase with age.

Mr Skerritt advised doctors to potentially avoid giving the vaccine to patients who were “extremely frail” or very close to death.

“What we don’t have that we often have with other vaccines is an indication of whether the vaccine will last for a year, three years or forever," he said.

“Generally, even the very serious safety effects that arise tend to happen 4-6 weeks after the first shots.”

Mr Skerrit also said there was a greater chance of a mild negative side effect associated with the Pfizer vaccine as opposed to the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The TGA is expecting a final decision on the AstraZeneca vaccine in February.
