BANGKOK, Feb 25 — The Myanmar junta’s foreign minister visited Thailand yesterday as regional powers tried to broker an end to three weeks of deadly unrest triggered by a military coup.
The talks came as an anti-coup protester died in detention, a local rescue organisation said. Four others have been killed in the crackdown.
Foreign minister Wunna Maung Lwin held talks with his counterparts from Thailand and Indonesia in what was the first known face-to-face meetings between a senior junta member and foreign government officials.

The United Nations Security Council should “institute a coordinated, global arms embargo” against the Myanmar military, said Fortify Rights and 136 other organisations in an open letter to the body and UN member states in Wednesday.
“The Myanmar military poses a demonstrable threat to international peace and security,” said Matthew Smith, Chief Executive Officer at Fortify Rights.
“The Security Council should break its long history of inaction on Myanmar and immediately respond to this crisis.”
Signatories to the open letter hail from 31 countries and include Fortify Rights, Human Rights Watch, and a diverse group of human rights organizations worldwide.

Yangon — Myanmar’s police have refused to open a case for a Yangon resident who was shot dead on Saturday night by suspected police officers.
Following the military regime’s imposition of the 8pm-4am curfew, late-night arrests of civilians and civil servants participating in the civil disobedience movement are mounting. Since the release of over 23,000 prisoners on Feb. 12, in what is believed to be an attempt to create unrest, Yangon residents have formed nighttime vigilante groups.
