West Bengal govt issues guidelines to keep bird flu at bay | Kolkata News

West Bengal has remained untouched by H5N1 or bird flu
KOLKATA: The state health department is keeping a close watch on the spread of avian influenza that has hit at least nine states in the country. So far, Bengal has remained untouched by H5N1 or bird flu, but health experts said in the absence of precautionary measures, the infection could cross state borders in no time.
The state health department on Monday issued an extensive guideline on preparedness to prevent bird flu from reaching Bengal. The advisory issued to chief medical officers of health (CMOH)s of all districts and that of Kolkata Municipal Corporation asks health officials to step up surveillance and keep all public health machinery ready. "Though bird flu is a rare disease among humans and is similar to common cold or flu, it can turn dangerous. Several cases have been reported in Bengal in the past few years though those did not lead to outbreaks. Surveillance should be carried out strictly to check the spread. At the same time, people must be aware and take proper precaution, like cooking the meat and eggs adequately to get rid of pathogen," said public health expert Anirban Dalui.

Plant that powers Kolkata is India's most water-efficient | Kolkata News

CESC Budge Budge Thermal Power station holding pond.
KOLKATA: A power generation plant, that supplies the bulk of the electricity to Kolkata, has emerged as the most water-efficient thermal power station in the country.
The 750 MW CESC Budge Budge Thermal Power station, that had earlier achieved a zero effluent discharge facility after it managed to reuse all the effluent water, has now reduced its water consumption to 2 litre for every unit of electricity generated against the national benchmark of 3.5 litre.
Coal and water are the primary requirements for a thermal plant. Water is boiled to form steam that rotates the turbines that is in turn coupled with a generator produces electricity.

Waste disposal worry at Lake | Kolkata News

Garbage piled up in the Lake due to the lack of maintenance
KOLKATA: The Covid situation, coupled with the illness of a KMDA official in charge of maintenance and beautification of Rabindra Sarobar, has delayed a compost project at the lake, leading to a problem in disposal of dry leaves and twigs that are shed in copious quantities in winter.
Sweeping activity at the lake to clear the walkways results in accumulation of five-six truck loads of biomass at the entrance near the Buddha temple located to the east of the Lake. On days when trucks don’t clear the garbage, the leaves and stray plastic waste pile up there and encroach upon the walkway, causing inconvenience to visitors.

Hills parties eye ST tag for 11 Nepali groups before Bengal polls | Kolkata News

Jalpaiguri: Hills outfits across political camps have long been seeking Scheduled Tribe status for 11 “left out” Nepali communities. They now want the BJP-led government at the Centre to deliver.
Representatives of GNLF, Communist Party of Revolutionary Marxists (CPRM), All India Gorkha League (AIGL) and others, who met Union home minister Amit Shah in Delhi recently, expect a decision ahead of the Bengal assembly polls.
They fear that Gorkha leader Bimal Gurung, who has switched loyalty and is supporting chief minister Mamata Banerjee, will corner BJP and its allies on the ground that the state government had sent a favourable recommendation to the Centre six years ago.
