From street to state: How radical nationalists gained power in Poland

The appointment of a well-known radical Right figure, Tomasz Greniuch, to lead the Wrocław branch of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), recently caused outrage in Poland.
The IPN is an important state research institute focusing on Polish history. Among other things, it is responsible for investigating crimes committed against the Polish nation under Nazism and communism.
On 22 February, two weeks after the announcement, Greniuch officially resigned from his new position. But the damage was done: the controversial appointment revealed the overlap between radical Right nationalism and public institutions in the country.
A historian, Greniuch was already head of the IPN’s branch in the small city of Opole, but Wrocław is one of the biggest cities in Poland. He is known as a former far-Right activist and the founder of a regional branch of the prominent radical Right organisation, the National Radical Camp (Obóz Narodowo-Radykalny, ONR).

ECHR Rules System Of Judge Appointments In Poland's Top Court 'violates' EU Law
The European Court of Justice, on March 2, ruled that Poland’s new regulations regarding the appointment of Supreme Court judges could violated European law.
The European Court of Justice, on March 2, ruled that Poland’s new regulations regarding the appointment of Supreme Court judges could violate European law. In his ruling, ECJ Judge Marko Ilesic said the new Polish regulations “are capable of giving legitimate doubts” in the minds of subjects of the law as to the neutrality of judges appointed by the president of Poland and whether they are influenced by politics. The ruling came in response to a complaint filed by Polish judges who said that their right to challenge their rejection has been sabotaged.

Romania-based Black Sea Oil and Gas will begin extracting natural gas from its 600 million US dollars offshore Romanian project in November, its chief executive Mark Beacom said on Tuesday, but added further progress hinged on scrapping a disputed tax. The additional tax on offshore projects is the last remnant of a series of price caps, taxes and export restrictions introduced two years ago by a previous centre-left government. The changes, most of which have since been reversed, blindsided gas producers, which have spent over a decade and billions of dollars preparing to tap Romania’s Black Sea gas.

DALLAS, Feb. 23, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- The Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum is deeply concerned over a recent ruling by a Polish court that may compromise the future of Holocaust scholarship in Poland.
Poland has long struggled to come to grips with its role in the Holocaust, as both victim and perpetrator.  Its 2018 law banning statements that accuse the Polish state and nation of complicity in Nazi crimes deliberately obscures the participation of Polish collaborators in the murder of Jews.
