This summer, Americans are flocking to Greece. President Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken should take the hint and consider making a trip of their own. It would be as good for America as it would be for Greece. Two centuries after Greece declared its independence from Ottoman rule—inspired by the American revolution—the United States could not find a better partner in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and renewing democracy across the globe.
The surge of American tourists has its roots in successful policies that both countries have pursued, proving government can actually get things done—a key element in beating back the wave of populism that has washed over Western and global politics. The Greek government saw this coming, and targeted the lucrative U.S. market. Greece established the safest protocols possible for tourism—including requiring proof of vaccination for all foreign tourists, and mandatory masks inside hotels and restaurants. “We branded Greece as a safe destination and we said we would open on 14 May,” Greek Tourism Minister Haris Theoharis told the

Greece has been criticized for having one of the slowest vaccination roll out in Europe. But official data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDP) provide a more encouraging picture.
Greek Tourism Minister Haris Theoharis was grilled at BBC on Thursday about the country’s preparedness to open to travelers on Friday. The journalist insisted that Greece is vaccinating citizens with the slowest pace in Europe. This, however, appears to be only partly true according to the latest report by the EU agency published on May 9.

Greece kicked off the formal start of the tourism season with Tourism Minister Haris Theoharis announcing a multimillion-euro promotional campaign aimed at saving its most important economic sector from a second summer lost to the coronavirus.
At an event with the impressive Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounio in the background, Theoharis presented some of the main points of the government’s plan for Friday’s reopening to international tourism.
The Tourism MInister did not say much of new other than all travelers to Greece will have to fill in a passenger locator form (PLF) detailing where they will be staying and for how long and will also have to present a certificate of vaccination against Covid-19 or a recent negative PCR test or an official document certifying recent recovery from the virus.

Greece officially reopened for tourism on Friday, becoming the latest southern European country to do so.
While much of the European Union waits for a digitized travel pass to reopen their borders to tourism, Greece announced the start of its tourism season with new advertising campaigns and events.
This week, Tourism Minister Haris Theoharis held an outdoor press conference in front of the Temple of Poseidon outside of Athens, where he declared the country was ready to welcome back tourists, the BBC reported.

BERLIN -- Greece is one of the best prepared tourist destinations, with a clear message and plan, and looks forward with optimism and confidence to the upcoming opening of tourism from May 14, Tourism Minister Haris Theoharis said in Berlin, where he concluded a two-day working visit on Wednesday.
After his meetings with the German Deputy Minister of Economy in charge of Tourism Thomas Barais, as well as top executives of the TUI Tourist Group and the leadership of the German Travel Association (DRV), Theoharis spoke with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA), referring mainly to the effort to present Greece's health and hygiene rules and the government's plan for safe holidays. "Greece is one of the best prepared countries and, most importantly, has a clear message, which it explains clearly. Our system has a beginning, a middle and an end, it is professional, mature and balanced between openness and security," the minister pointed out.
