Looked at them, they ve tried to tune them so they can detect the frequency of what the pinger should emit. the first thing. the second thing is they operate deep enough. almost 300 meters, maybe deeper, and are able to provide that good link to a better acoustic channel away from the noise of the surface. the only problem with them is they really are a narrow area search tool. when you think about it, you ve got to drop sonobuoys near something you re interested, you think exists in the water. right now, they re looking at an 18,000 square mile search area. that would take between 40 and 80 drops of sonobuoys to cover the area. it s really a tool for narrow search, not a tool for broader search like the pinger towed array. and yet we hang on every single detail and every single ping as well. maybe you can weigh in on this as an accident investigator. we just heard matthew chance talking about the optimism of the australian prime minister and perhaps he was just ....

The plane, et cetera, winter approaches. the weather will call an end to it at some point. what does it entail mapping the ocean floor? . it involves the use of sonar. if you re looking at the sea floor itself and wanting a picture of symmetry, the type of underwater topography you see on google earth, you use a multi-beam sonar, echo is equipped with. if you want images of the sea floor and start at things like aircraft wreckage, you use a side scan sonar. that s deployed one of two ways, either by auv or towed array, towed sled. you could actually map the entire certainly area in about nine months if you elected to do so. all right. incredible investment of time. thank you so much to awful you. appreciate it. all right. we will have much more on this ....

like a drone, or towed along on a sled. we call that a towed array. and we haven t gone to that phase yet, because we haven t had that initial starting point. what happens when the batteries for those flight data recorders, the cockpit voice recorder, are dead, and the pingers the pinging is no longer going? where do the investigators, the search operation go from there? well, you see each day that the search area is shifting around. and that s because data that s being gathered from the aerial process, from the satellite process, and from reinterpreting the handshake data is being reanalyzed and reinforming the search area. so it s not game over if the pingers are not located. now some believe the plane may have actually gone in full, into the water, sort of like sully sullenberger s plane, miracle on the hundred dollars son, but then sunk. if there is a plane intact at the bottom of the indian ocean, how hard would it be to find that? if you know where it is, if if you ....

Looking for. they spotted something, we don t know what it is, but you ve heard these reports? yeah. i ve heard the reports about an operational breakthrough or enhancement. i hope that it s something substantive. i hope that it s something that really can be followed up on and not just another wild goose chase. because she s ships have pretty sophisticated sonar and we know that there s a british submarine in the area as well? that s right. they ve got the towed array which can pick up the ping. we have a few days left, we hope. let s really pray that they ve got something tonight. when you ve worked, tom, at the fbi, and you were assistant director, you worked with malaysian authorities and chuck hagel is meeting now with the malaysian defense minister who is also the acting transport minister. they are both at a conference, pacific area conference in hawaii. chuck hagel is about to speak fairly soon. we ll have live coverage of that. ....

Navy, coast guard, et cetera, they have the equipment either on an a surface listening device or a towed array on the ship itself which goes to a depth and listens for the equipment. so it s important that they have the equipment that will listen for the specific frequency. literally an army of people are looking for any sign, any ping emitted from these flight data recorders. i know it s a very large area but are you surprised nothing has been heard as of yet? it is surprising. with as many people out looking for this signal it s extremely surprising they haven t heard anything yet. what does that tell you? the only thing i can assume they are not looking in the right area. of course our equipment doesn t work if the aircraft is on land, it only operates if it s in the water. so right now it s just fairly speculation that, you know, our ....
