Washed up on the island of reunion off the southeast coast of africa a fragment which boeing investigators have identified as the trailing edge of a boeing 777 wing. there is only one 777 missing in the world. the island of reunion is 3500 miles from the last-known destination of the mh 370 as it flew from kuala lumpur to beijing. nothing is known about its last fateful movements. an operation involving eight countries took place following the disappearance. nothing, including those all-important black boxes, were ever found. part of the difficulty was the massive 22,000 mile search area roughly the size of west virginia. families of the 270 victims had until now held out hopes the plane might somehow have survived. jeannette mcguire from brisbane australia lost her sister kathy on the flight. we re all wanting and waiting so much for any sort of news ....

Apart or exactly the state of the metal in almost i would say a more molecular fashion? well that s going to depend a little bit on how it has survived the more than a year in the ocean. just as a point, it looks like the flaperon is actually mostly composite rather than metal. it may have a honeycomb upper and lower surface. what they are going to look at on a macro level is looking at the trailing edge. did that break off being bent up? did it break off being bent down? did it fail in some other fashion? being torn off to the left or to the right. from that looking at that and looking at the loads with the models of the structure, you can then analyze perhaps angles ....

I did that on the airbus 380 and they are the right people to be doing this analysis. so forensic analysis they re looking for. what will it could tell us is whether or not this came off as a result of hitting the water first or if it came off in midair. if it came off in midair, it can tell us a couple things. if the analysis we ve seen from the independent group and from australia saying that the airplane did an incredibly steep rate of descent, it could have gone transsonic, causing flutter on the trailing edge of this wing and it looks like it happened because the trailing edge is pretty rough. so those are the things we re looking at first. right. the back end is all cut up there and the front end is smooth. larry, let me ask you, if there had been an explosion, would residue still exist on that wing flap at this point? i seriously doubt you would find explosive residue. but you might find evidence on the surface of that structure ....

Debris, what s the best we can learn from this. look at these pictures. first of all, the picture on the left, that s the bit that connects to the plane. the other bit goes out the back, the trailing edge. what you are looking at is how did it rip apart from the plane? was it deployed, was it at a ten, 15, 20-degree angle when it left the aircraft? that will tell you how the plane went in to the water. did it go on an angle, with the tail first, belly flop? all of that. look at the back end of that and you ll see how it has been wrenched aside. they will need to work out is that from a year in the water or was that the violent moment of impact with the ocean? it won t tell us precisely where the rest of the plane is? when you reverse drift that, it will take you roughly back to the area but no. no precise location. ....
