Programs of previous nuclear disasters like this one at three mile island or confront students with entirely new situations. and while that builds confidence on a nuclear level, there are steps being taken to improve safety on the technical side too. the french nuclear constructor is now desighing reactors with double shells and a catch pacen under the reactor core to consolidate fuel rods, basically planning for the worst because a core meltdown is no longer thinkable. by doing it to the maximum, it will cool down and get out of the primary vessel. if that were to happen, then we have a number of systems which are waiting for it some how. reporter: the power plant designer says the safety features included the new nuclear plant add about 25% to ....

Terms of your safety and it goes from level one ald goes up to seven. and as you go up in each category, the debt level raises ten fold. level five, where we were at before, that was on par with the three mile incident of 1979. now they say fukushima is up there with 1986. what kind of consequences are there as a result of this? level 5, according to this scale, they call it an accident with wider consequences. several deaths can occur at a level 5 and severe damage to the reactor core. i ll advance this for you. taking you to a six, they consider this a serious accident with a significant release of radioactive material and they have to do counter measures basically to help counter act what s been released. number 7. that s the top one there, considered a major accident here with a major release of ....

his view of this is how would it be libyan forces doing that because much of their if not all of their air strike capability is supposedly and there s concern among the rebel forces, they feel that they re becoming targets and now accidentally and that there s some sort of disconnect with how they re engaging in these air strikes. we ll check in with ben wedeman there. new in japan. officials at the badly damaged nuclear power plant now say that radiation levels in the seawater are dropping dramatically. they re shooting nitrogen into the reactor core at the fukushima daiichi nuclear power plant. that s a move to try to stop a hydrogen explosion that the plant denies there s any immediate danger. reuters reporting that five people have been killed in an air strike on an opposition convoy near the town of brega in eastern libya. we were talking to ben wedeman trying to get the details. he said two deaths. ....

Them any closer to finding the source of the leak itself. that s going to continue as they continue to pump more water in to cool those reactors. even though they stopped the water going into the ocean, it s still going to be building up somewhere. they just don t know where it may build up next. that was the bit of good news. the bad news is now they are turning their attention to try and prevent a possible hydrogen explosi explosion. they don t think there s an explosion imminent. but they re trying to inject nitrogen into the containment vessel around the reactor core. and i m no chemist, but what i m told nitrogen does is it prevents hydrogen from building up in those containers. and that s what caused the explosions that we saw right after the tsunami, after it hit, that damaged everything so badly. so this is a way to sort of keep that at least as a precautionary measure from happening. they re going to do it in unit one, then units two and three over the next couple of days as w ....
