Conagra benefits from sustained and elevated at-home demand in Q3 2021

Conagra benefits from sustained and elevated at-home demand in Q3 2021
Still benefiting from a sustained consumer shift to at-home eating over a year past the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic, Conagra has registered a nearly 10% increase in organic net sales for Q3 2021 compared to the same period last year.
The company experienced a 9.7% increase in organic net sales across its core retail segments —refrigerated/frozen (12.1%), snacks (+13.1%), and staples (+15%) – driven by a 6.1% increase in volume and a favorable price/mix impact of 3.6%. Organic net sales were partly offset by a continued downturn to Conagra’s foodservice business, the company noted.

Study highlights 'troubling' absence of animal welfare knowledge in aquaculture

Study highlights ‘troubling’ absence of animal welfare knowledge in aquaculture
With traditional fishing methods in decline, aquaculture – the industrial farming of fish, shellfish, and other aquatic species – is on the rise, but with little knowledge of the impact it’s had on animal welfare, says a team of researchers at New York University's Department of Environmental Studies.
Touted as both a solution to food insecurity and the global issue of overfishing, aquaculture is the fastest growing farmed food sector, according to the FAO’s
FAO reported that global fish consumption increased at an annual rate of 3.1% between 1961 and 2017, twice that of the annual world population growth for the same period, and higher than other animal protein foods (meat, dairy, milk, etc.) consumption of which increased by 2.1% over the same period.

Ardent Mills' answers call for keto flour that doesn't compromise flavor, function or complicate production

Ardent Mills answers call for keto flour that doesn’t compromise flavor, function or complicate production
A new line of grain-based flour blends launching today from Ardent Mills promises to deliver the low-carb health benefits consumers want without compromising taste or texture or requiring manufacturers to install new equipment.
Unlike many competing low-carb or keto flour blends that skip the wheat, Ardent Mill’s new line of white all-purpose and specialized Keto Certified Low Net Carb Flour is nut-free, grain-based and contains gluten, which allows customers to use it on their current equipment without any change to produce baked goods that are safe for consumers with nut allergies, Ken Ruud, director of innovation at Ardent Mills told FoodNavigator-USA.

Soup-To-Nuts Podcast: As food insecurity soars, Simply Organic funds innovative solutions

Soup-To-Nuts Podcast: As food insecurity soars, Simply Organic funds innovative solutions
Since the pandemic began, food insecurity in America has increased exponentially, and stakeholders across the value chain are stepping up to provide relief, including Simply Organic, which is giving $150,000 to five organizations that not only help put food on the tables of those in need but which do so with an eye towards environmental sustainability and reducing the risk of food insecurity going forward.
Recognizing the dramatic impact of the pandemic on food insecurity, which Feeding America estimates has touched 17 million more people in the US since the outbreak began for a total of 54 million people nationwide, Simply Organic increased its giving by $50,000 during this grant cycle – bringing donations from the Simply Organic Giving Fund to more than $2 million over the past 20 years.

USDA extends free school meals through the summer, but who ultimately will pay?

USDA extends free school meals through the summer, but who ultimately will pay?
USDA’s announcement this week to extend free school meals through the summer – and possibly the end of the next school year – ensures students are fed even if pandemic-related safety measures keep them at home, but it doesn’t alleviate increased financial pressures schools face providing the expanded services.
US Department of Agriculture Sec. Tom Vilsack told school nutrition professionals gathered virtually at the School Nutrition Association’s Legislative Action Conference March 9 that the department would extend through Sept. 30, 2021, key COVID-19 Summer Food Service Program and Seamless Summer Option waivers that allow schools to serve free meals to students outside of required group settings and meal times and allow guardians to pick up meals for their children, including in bulk to cover multiple days to reduce exposure to the coronavirus through less frequent interactions.
