Argentina's populist president meets billionaire Elon Musk in Texas — and a bromance is born

One is an erratic billionaire entrepreneur and self-declared free-speech absolutist, prone to profanity-laden rants against “wokeness” and obsessed with making humanity a multi-planetary species. Tech executive Elon Musk and Argentine President Javier Milei finally sealed their budding bromance Friday at a Tesla electric car factory in Texas — their first meeting after months of mutual admiration on social media. “To an exciting & inspiring future!" Musk wrote on X, or Twitter as it was known before he bought it in 2022, along with a photo of him and Milei both grinning widely and giving the camera two thumbs up, the libertarian president's trademark gesture.

Argentina's police step up their response to growing anti-government protests

A confrontation between Argentine authorities and anti-government protesters angered by President Javier Milei's spending cuts escalated on Wednesday, as protesters blocking the capital's key thoroughfare were forcibly dispersed and eight of the movement’s participants arrested. In a rare move, riot police officers deployed powerful water cannons, drenching demonstrators. Argentines demanding more food for soup kitchens hurled sticks and stones, set garbage cans alight and paralyzed the main street of Buenos Aires in defiance of new legal changes banning roadblocks.

Dengue fever outbreak in Argentina leads to shortage of a must-have item: mosquito repellent

Shelves have gone empty, as residents hunt in vain and resort to DIY alternatives. As the South American country contends with its worst outbreak of dengue fever in recent memory, bug spray has become this season’s hot-ticket item. “We’ve been to at least 30 pharmacies all over the city and there is nothing left,” Ana Infante said as she swatted mosquitoes away from her two small daughters, their arms visibly pocked with red bumps.

Venezuela's huge diaspora struggles to register to vote

Millions of Venezuelans who fled economic misery in their country could find themselves unable to vote in key July presidential elections, as complaints mount over hurdles at consulates abroad for those seeking to register. Election registration was meant to start on March 18 and will run for a month, before the July 28 vote in which President Nicolas Maduro is seeking a third term.

Argentines commemorate coup as Milei sows doubt about dictatorship past

Thousands of Argentines took to the streets around the country on Sunday to commemorate the anniversary of the 1976 military coup that lasted eight years and led to widespread repression, torture and disappearances. Human rights organizations estimate that 30,000 people were kidnapped, tortured and murdered during the military dictatorship between 1976 and 1983. "Today there are families here in Argentina, who are still looking for their (disappeared) children, so the idea is to be able, every March 24, to remember that date so as not to repeat those mistakes again," said Rolando Gutierrez, a 45-year-old teacher who attended the March in Buenos Aires.

Israel-Hamas war brings back pain to Argentine Jewish community decades after major bombing attack

On Oct. 7, when Hamas militants attacked numerous targets in Israel, killing hundreds and abducting others, Marina Degtiar felt she had traveled back in time, to July 18, 1994. What happened in Buenos Aires 30 years ago broke her apart. A bomb-laden van exploded inside a Jewish community center where her 21-year-old brother Cristian worked.

Argentina's president condemns threat by provincial governor to cut energy supplies in dispute

The government of Argentina's libertarian President Javier Milei on Monday condemned a threat by the governor of the oil-rich province of Chubut to cut off energy supplies to the rest of the country amid a dispute over funding reductions. The squabble started late last week, when the federal government held back the transfer of 13,000 million pesos (around $15 million) in federal tax revenues to the Chubut province.
