Lessons from Namyang fiasco

Lessons from Namyang fiasco
No company can survive without consumers' confidence
Namyang Dairy Products Chairman Hong Won-sik offered to resign Tuesday, apologizing for causing controversy over false claims about the anti-viral effects of the company's yogurt drink, Bulgaris. In a press conference at the company headquarters in southern Seoul, he also vowed not to hand over management of the company to his children.
Hong's resignation came three weeks after Namyang's research chief claimed in a symposium that Bulgaris reduces the chance of COVID-19 infections by 78 percent. Following the announcement, the company's shares soared and the yogurt drink sold out in many retail stores.

Angry investors are calling on consumers to vote with their wallets by boycotting Namyang Dairy Products, after the company released the pseudoscientific claim that its yogurt drink Bulgaris can help control COVID-19.
After Namyang's claim, its share price rose over 8 percent, April 13, and by 28.68 percent the following morning. However, experts including those at the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety questioned Bulgaris' effectiveness against the coronavirus and concluded that the company had exaggerated "research" results. The dairy product firm's stock nosedived by nearly a third over the next four days.

Korea Exchange investigates dairy firm over stock price irregularities

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety accused Namyang Dairy Products of breaching the Act on Labeling and Advertising of Foods, Thursday, by announcing Bulgaris yogurt drinks were supposedly effective against COVID-19.
"Without animal experiments or clinical trials, Namyang announced Bulgaris was effective against COVID-19," the ministry said in a press release.
This came after the Korea Exchange (KRX) started an investigation into the dairy firm for alleged insider trading, following a momentary hike in its stock price which came following the announcement.
