A growing dispute between India and Canada has erupted following allegations made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has filed a defamation suit against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi for making false allegations of irregularities in a food processing project. Sarma's counsel stated that the case has been filed for Rs 10 crore at the Court of Civil Judge and will be moved on September 26. The controversy began when a media report alleged that agricultural land was reclassified as industrial land after being purchased by Sarma's company. Gogoi made allegations of corruption and sought intervention from the Commerce and Industry Minister.
Senior advocate Devajit Saikia, her counsel, told PTI that the case has been filed at the Court of Civil Judge (Senior Division) of Kamrup Metropolitan on Friday and it will be moved on September 26.
