Nigerian Government Holds Emergency Meeting With Organised Labour To Avert Nationwide Strike

Representatives of the Nigerian government are currently meeting with the executives of organised labour at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the nation’s capital, to avert the planned strike scheduled to begin during the week.   The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria had resolved to begin an indefinite nationwide strike starting on October 3, 2023.   This comes after a joint press briefing held by the leaders of the unions in Abuja last Tuesday.

  Nigeria's President, Bola Tinubu, will address Nigerians in a nationwide broadcast on Sunday to mark the 63rd independence anniversary of the country.   A statement on Saturday by the presidential spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, said that the president will address the country by 7am. According to the statement, "Television, radio, and other electronic media networks are enjoined to hook up to the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority and Radio Nigeria for the broadcast.”

Organised Labour, NLC, TUC Shun Emergency Meeting With Nigerian Government's Representatives Over Short Notice

Leaders of the organised labour – the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) – on Friday failed to attend a meeting called by the representatives of the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government in a desperate effort to avert the planned nationwide strike from October 3. According to the two labour centres, the government’s invitation came late as they had already scheduled engagements outside Abuja, the federal capital.
