CHIEF WHIP: Liakat Kablay Botswana Democratic Party’s Chief Whip, Liakat Kablay has called on his party leadership to let go of those who do not want to be Ministers. In an exclusive interview with The Voice from his Parliamentary home this week, Kablay admitted the controversy surrounding the recent Cabinet reshuffle was terrible for the party’s image. Highlighting former Finance Minister, Thapelo Matsheka’s shock redeployment to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing Development, Kablay said if the rumours he wanted to resign from cabinet are true, President Mokgweetsi Masisi should not stand in his way. “There’s no Mama’s baby in politics and Masisi should let those who want to step down from cabinet do so, the same way he did with Unity Dow who joined the backbench from cabinet,” insisted Kablay. ....
7th February 2021 The Ombudsman Report of 2021 has revealed that Unity Dow, during her tenure as the Minister of Education and Skills Development may have overstepped procedure and OKeyed financial transactions before services are rendered. Mentioned is the Department of Tertiary and Education Fund (DTEF’s payment to International Aviation Solution (IAS) for services that never bore fruit for any of the aviation school’s students. Despite having been given an opportunity by the Ombudsman to comment, the report states that Dow failed to respond to date. The report sheds some disturbing light in a case where students admitted under government sponsorship to specifically study for pilot training, even now, are without qualifications because of decisions which were made by DTEF, Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA), and Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) in the year 2013. ....
