Unity announces a ‘Runtime Fee’, which will charge developers each time a game using the engine is downloaded
A new Unity Runtime Fee could spell disaster for indie developers using the popular game engine.
Unity is receiving major backlash from game developers over newly announced runtime fees that would be based on game installs.
Unity announced a new fee structure today, and developers are none too happy. “We are introducing a Unity Runtime Fee that is based upon each time a qualifying game is downloaded by an end user,” the company wrote in a blog post announcing the change.
Unity is putting a new pricing model into effect on Jan. 1, 2024, tying a fee to game installs. The game industry is not happy about it.
