Portugal marks the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution army coup that brought democracy

Military vehicles and red carnations return to the streets and squares of downtown Lisbon on Thursday as Portugal reenacts dramatic moments from the army coup that brought democracy 50 years ago. Thousands of people are expected to attend celebrations of the so-called Carnation Revolution, which ended a stifling four-decade dictatorship established by Antonio Salazar. It also paved the way for Portugal’s 1986 entry into the European Union, then called the European Economic Community.

Hungary's anti-fraud body calls for extended powers to monitor EU funds

Hungary's Integrity Authority, an anti-fraud body tasked with overseeing European Union funds, lacks the proper investigative authority to expose possible wrongdoing, its leader told Reuters, calling for an extension of the body's powers. The body, created under EU pressure by Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government to unlock billions of euros worth of funds suspended over rule-of-law concerns, was launched in late 2022 to prevent, detect and correct the misuse of EU money. International watchdogs say Orban has long channelled EU funds to businessmen close to his nationalist Fidesz party to entrench himself in power.

Hungary's Orbán urges European conservatives, and Trump, toward election victories at CPAC event

Hungary's nationalist prime minister, addressing a conservative conference in Budapest on Thursday, said upcoming European and U.S. elections were a chance for right-wing forces to defeat the “progressive world spirit,” and encouraged former U.S. President Donald Trump to defend “his own truth” in his ongoing criminal trial. Viktor Orbán, a right-wing populist and the European Union's longest-serving leader, told supporters at the Conservative Political Action Conference Hungary that conservatives across the West, including himself and Trump, are under attack by a hegemonic liberal order.
