That has been the case in Kanniyakumari constituency (Nagercoil constituency until 2009) all through, with Congress remaining the most dominant force, with a long string of victories and BJP emerging as the main challenger with two wins -- in 1999 in alliance with DMK and in 2014 without the prop of either DMK or AIADMK, thus making Kanniyakumari a rare oasis for the party in its long electoral drought in Tamil Nadu. When PM Modi launched his ambitious South push via Tamil Nadu this time, he chose to hit Kanniyakumari right in mid-March with a rally.
