Greater Sydney Residents May Be Eligible For One-Off Support Payments

Published June 26, 2021
The two-week lockdown affecting Greater Sydney residents could trigger one-off support payments for workers losing their income due to the new COVID restrictions.
Scott Morrison announced a “national scheme” available to all states where a lockdown is needed for more than a week. As Greater Sydney plunges into a two-week lockdown from 6pm tonight, that qualifies them for the payment.
NSW recorded 29 new locally acquired cases of #COVID19 in the 24 hours to 8pm last night. This includes 17 cases which were announced on Friday morning. pic.twitter.com/78izt7RJv1
To be eligible, you must be aged over 17 and unable to work due to the lockdown. You must also not be receiving any other kind of support payments, like JobSeeker or Youth Allowance. A $500 payment will be available to those who normally work over 20 hours, while a $325 payment will be available to those who normally work less than 20 hours.

States have different responses to COVID because 'each outbreak is different': Merlino

Victorian Acting Premier James Merlino has argued the reason states have different approaches to COVID-19 outbreaks is because “the nature of each outbreak is different”.

“There's national agreement in terms of aggressive suppression," he said.

“There's national agreement in terms of infection prevention, protection controls that we have in hotel quarantine."

“So, there are a number of things that we engage with and agree at a national level.

“Every outbreak is different, and that's why the public health advice, whether it's in WA, New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, here in Victoria, the public health advice is dealing with the situation on the ground.”

Victoria records 11 new cases | Sky News Australia

Victorian Acting Premier James Merlino says Victoria has recorded five formal cases overnight and a further six since midnight -with a “significant number of exposure sites” linked to the new infections.

“We’ve officially recorded five new cases today. All locally acquired.

“I can also advise there are a further six locally acquired cases that came through after the late-night cut-off and our public health teams are urgently investigating and interviewing these cases.”

Mr Merlino said two of the five cases relate to the City of Whittlesea outbreak, one to the Star carwash, and one is under investigation.

“We are now managing 4,200 primary close contacts across all our exposure sites; we have also had 43,874 tests and 16,752 vaccine doses,” he said.
