Residents urged the department to capture the leopard after it attacked four goats owned by a farmer at Gandhi Nagar and a pet dog at Mattapparai on January 20.
The leopard was first spotted in Madukkarai region in 2019. After it killed two goats of a farmer at Vinayagar Kovil Street in July 2020, forest department personnel placed a cage and two camera traps to track its movement. But the big cat, between five to six years of age, remained elusive.
It returned to the area a month ago and was spotted at residential areas including Gandhi Nagar, Mavuthampathy, Tamilannai street, Mattapparai and Vinayagar Kovil street that are close to the reserved forest, a forest department official said.

A leopard that had been frequenting villages near Madukkarai in Coimbatore district and preying on the livestock, fell into a trap laid by the Forest Department early on Saturday morning.
The leopard, aged around six, was trapped in a cage placed by the Department at Gandhi Nagar near Madukkarai around 4 a.m. on Saturday.
The carnivore had been frequenting Ayyappan Kovil Street, Vinayagar Kovil Street, Ayyampathy, Tamilannai Street, Gandhi Nagar and a few other residential areas near Madukkarai for about a month. It had killed four goats of a farmer at Gandhi Nagar and attacked the pet dog of a resident of Mattapparai in the early hours of January 20.

COIMBATORE: A leopard that was frequenting villages near Madukkarai on the outskirts of Coimbatore was trapped in a cage by forest department officials on Saturday morning.
The leopard was released into Thengumarahada forest in Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve following a medical examination. The age of the carnivore is believed to be between five and six years.
The leopard was first spotted in Madukkarai region earlier in 2019, but no major issues were reported then. But in July 2020, the carnivore killed two goats belonging to a farmer in Vinayagar Kovil Street. Immediately, the forest department placed a cage and two camera traps near the village to track its movement, a forest department official said.
