Germany updates max vitamin & mineral levels for supplements

The German Government’s main scientific institution has updated guidance outlining maximum levels of vitamins and minerals in food supplements and fortified foods that are based on recent findings.
According to The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), revisions were in response to nutrient data suggesting the country’s intake of vitamin D, calcium, folic acid and others did not meet the German Nutrition Society’s guidance.
“The more the better - this is a misconception when it comes to vitamins and minerals," says BfR President Professor Dr. Andreas Hensel.
"The dose determines whether they benefit or harm our health".

Micronutrient changes a factor in gut complications, says expert

That was the suggestion from a nutrition and dietetics expert in response to a new
study pointing to advance glycation endproducts (AGEs) formed as contributing to microvascular and gut complications.
“The authors suggest the effects could be attributed to the presence of AGEs in the heated diet derived from reactions with carbohydrates in the diet,” says Tom Sanders, Professor Emeritus of Nutrition and Dietetics at King’s College London.
“However, the heat treatment would also cause oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids and sterols to potentially toxic compounds as well as changes amino acids and micronutrients.  The dietary design of the study is thus flawed.”

Vitamin D in moderation protects against respiratory infections: Meta-analysis

Vitamin D in moderation protects against respiratory infections: Meta-analysis
According to researchers, the study is the most comprehensive yet to focus on vitamin D and respiratory infections and could have significant implications for healthcare providers.
A new study, published in
The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, has found that daily doses of 400-1000 IU are associated with protection against acute respiratory infections, but that higher doses are not.
Four years ago, a meta-analysis of data from 25 randomized controlled trials of vitamin D supplementation for the prevention of acute respiratory infections showed a protective effect of this intervention.
Now, the same researchers from, amongst other institutes, Karolinska Institutet, Harvard Medical School and Queen Mary University of London, have expanded the earlier research with an additional 18 studies and updated meta-analysis.

Brands weigh in on launching immune support in crowded space

Brands weigh in on launching immune support in crowded space
They were already gaining traction pre-pandemic, and now, products in the immune support category are continuing to pop up everywhere—from elderberry water to CBD gummies to dairy-based probiotics. We spoke with a few brands who launched their own immune support products and they shared how they elevated their offerings in the increasingly saturated market.
Last fall, SmartyPants introduced a new functionals line that includes Healthy Immunity Daytime, Healthy Immunity Nighttime, and Healthy Kids Immunity.
“It’s such a crowded category,” lamented Courtney Nichols Gould, co-CEO SmartyPants.
“And we always promised ourselves we would never make a ‘me too’ product. We want to add a product to the shelf and only release it if we truly believe our solution is better or unique in a way that solves a real problem for people. When it comes to our immunity products specifically, it was all about looking at a more nutrient dense solution matched with our purpose-led approach.”

Market check: Folic acid supplements for pregnant women meet requirements

Market check: Folic acid supplements for pregnant women meet requirements
A new analysis of folic acid supplements available on the Spanish market for pregnant women has found supplements are consistent with declared dosages and meet legal requirements for stated health claims.
The new research actually found that the samples analysed could actually include more health claims than already declared in their labelling. They suggest manufacturers could have selected claims that they believe best address the particular situation and physiological conditions of pregnant women.
According to the EuroPrevall Birth Cohort, a multi-center study carried out in nine European countries, the most commonly used food supplements by European pregnant women are those with folic acid, and Spain is the country with the highest consumption of food supplements (

Riding a great year for the dietary supplement industry and for multi level marketing companies in general Nature’s Sunshine notched its best quarter ever as it reported its 2020 year end final results.
Nature’s Sunshine CEO Terrence Morehead attributed the company’s strong performance to a transformation of the company’s ecommerce platforms which was completed in the second and third quarters.  With it, the company rolled out a new auto ship program that has proven popular with consumers.
