Bucknell Elementary School Principal LaRonda Peterson stood in the doorway of a newly reopened classroom Tuesday morning, arms folded, alert for signs of trouble.
A small boy in a blue jacket popped into view. He had just been released for a midmorning break. He took a few halting steps toward Peterson, and she backed into the hallway to maintain an appropriate social distance, her wide smile apparent even behind her mask.

WASHINGTON - Anna Gueorguieva had big plans for 2021: After she and her 10-year-old daughter Amelie got the coronavirus vaccine, they would visit Gueorguieva's parents in Bulgaria and maybe also travel through Asia. In the fall, Amelie would return to school for the first time since the start of the pandemic.
But when Gueorguieva, a World Bank senior economist who lives in the District of Columbia, asked her doctor when children in D.C. would be immunized, she learned that there are no vaccines yet available for kids her daughter's age, and none on the horizon.

WASHINGTON - The Capitol was still littered with the wreckage left by the violent mob of Donald Trump supporters when President-elect Joe Biden phoned House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on the afternoon of Jan. 8.
Just 48 hours after the deadly attack, Democratic lawmakers - including Pelosi of California and top Senate Democrat Charles Schumer of New York - had quickly coalesced behind a plan to try to force Trump from office, one that appeared headed toward an unprecedented second impeachment.

WASHINGTON - Four companies that agreed to pay a combined $26 billion to settle claims about their roles in the opioid crisis plan to deduct some of those costs from their taxes and recoup around $1 billion apiece.
In recent months, as details of the blockbuster settlement were still being worked out, pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson and the "big three" drug distributors - McKesson, AmerisourceBergen and Cardinal Health -all updated their financial projections to include large tax benefits stemming from the expected deal, a Washington Post analysis of regulatory filings found.

Virginia lawmakers are considering a proposal that would allow bicyclists to yield instead of pause at stop signs in some cases without getting ticketed.
The measure before the Virginia General Assembly is in response to demands from an increasing number of bicyclists seeking protections and access to the road, particularly as their numbers rise amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Supporters say it will make roads safer for bicyclists after increases in traffic injuries and deaths, while opponents argue it makes the movements of cyclists less predictable. The bill also would require drivers to change lanes when passing a bicyclist if three feet of distance isn't possible and would allow two cyclists to stay side-by-side in a lane.
