Weinstein's extradition to LA to face new rape charges delayed

Disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein, 69, will be staying at the Wende Correctional Facility a little longer.
Weinstein has been indicted on new rape and assault charges from five women dating back to 2004 in Los Angeles. The newly reveal indictment contains the same allegations the one-time Hollywood mogul was previously charged with, according to a person with direct knowledge who spoke on condition of anonymity because the indictment is sealed.
At a hearing in Buffalo Monday, Defense lawyer Norman Effman cited a paperwork technicality after his requests for a "humanitarian" delay for Weinstein's medical needs were rejected. Effman challenged the legal paperwork to transfer Weinstein to LA to face the new indictment, as his client watched the proceeding via video link from Wende.

Low-profile Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul is no stranger to politics

The growing calls for Gov. Andrew Cuomo to resign amid multiple allegations of sexual harassment and a nursing home scandal have focused attention on the state’s second-in-command, Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul.
Though a familiar figure in the Buffalo area, Hochul is not exactly a household name around New York State. The lieutenant governor, in her sixth year in office, has stayed in the shadows compared to the attention-seeking Cuomo.

Until recently, her most notable public appearances have been to introduce the governor at the annual State of the State speech and talk up his agenda.

One year of COVID-19: How virus has impacted WNY

WBFO's Tom Dinki reports about COVID-19's impact on nursing homes.
About a third of all U.S. COVID-19 deaths have been linked to nursing homes. In Erie County, nursing home residents make up more than half of all COVID deaths.
The New York State Attorney General, in a report released in January, found many nursing homes across the state failed to provide adequate personal protective equipment and follow infection protocols, especially during the early months of the pandemic.

Plus, visitor restrictions have left families unable to see loved ones in nursing homes for most, if not all, of the last year.

Sixth woman accuses Cuomo of misconduct

WBFO Albany Correspondent Karen Dewitt reports
Cuomo, on a late afternoon conference call with reporters over one hour after the latest allegations were published said he had not heard about them.
“I’m not aware of any other claim,” Cuomo said.
The paper reports that the governor’s office was made aware of the new allegations on Monday.
And he repeated a denial first made over a week ago, saying he never inappropriately touched anyone.
"As I said last week, this is very simple. I never touched anyone inappropriately.” Cuomo said. “I never made any inappropriate advances. As I said last week, no one ever told me at the time that I made them feel uncomfortable."

A second woman has come forward and accused New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo of sexual harassment. Cuomo denies the allegations, but has agreed to make a referral to the state’s Attorney General Leticia James to conduct an investigation.
Charlotte Bennett, a 25-year-old former executive assistant to Cuomo, who told her story to the New York Times on Saturday, joins Lindsey Boylan in accusing Cuomo of harassing, intimidating and inappropriate behavior.
Bennett says beginning last spring, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the governor began showing what she felt was an inappropriate interest in her, asking her in private meetings in his office questions about her sex life and whether she was monogamous in her relationships.

Gestational surrogacy now legal in NYS

New York's Child-Parent Security Act is now in effect, helping LGBTQ and other couples struggling with fertility start families, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Prior to this, gestational surrogacy was illegal in the state and surrogacy agreements were considered unenforceable. The law, passed in June 2019, creates legal criteria for such agreements and a Surrogates Bill of Rights. It also streamlines the "Second Parent Adoption" process -- for establishing parenthood when one of the individuals is a non-biological parent -- with a single visit to court while the child is in utero.
"With this law now in effect, no longer will anyone will be blocked from the joys of starting a family and raising children simply because of who they are," said Cuomo.
