Weekly East Division Snapshot: End of the 2021 Season - All About The Jersey

Welcome to the end of the 2021 regular season for the East Division. For three teams, their seasons ended on Saturday. However, Coronavirus impacting has forced the league’s hand to re-schedule games and so there are a handful happening in the next few days. As it turned out, most of those games have meaning beyond the regular season. Where in past seasons, I would end the weekly snapshots with the final full week of the season. But as there were potentially real tantalizing stakes in all but one of these extra games, I decided on this one last post and stated so in last week’s snapshot. After a week of playoff teams playing non-playoff teams in the East and a whole lot of news involving the New York Rangers, the potential stakes mostly went up in smoke, but there is something to watch on Monday and Tuesday.

All this and more in this week’s snapshot.

As the NHL Trade Deadline was last Monday, this is the stretch run for the regular season. For the East Division, the big question is not so much who will make the playoffs but in what position they are in. The New York Islanders were challenging the Washington Capitals for several weeks. However, this past week saw the Capitals soar and the Isles fall so Washington is in a position to really lock up first. This also means that real fight is for second place for that other home-ice playoff spot. The Islanders, Pittsburgh, and Boston will be focused on that prize. The bottom half is what it is. The New York Rangers are the only one of the four with a larger than a really marginal chance to make a late push, but catching Boston is a supremely tall order. The Philadelphia Flyers and New Jersey Devils, pretty much have their fates sealed. The Buffalo Sabres are officially eliminated. Here is how the East Division looks prior to Sunday’s games.

In the thirteenth weekly East Divison snapshot of the 2020-21 NHL season, the Washington Capitals are still barely leading a three-team race for first and the bottom four remains the same. All this and more in this week’s snapshot.

This week is the first full one in April and the last one in the NHL regular season before the 2021 NHL Trade Deadline. Maybe not much will happen. Maybe more will happen than we may think once some initial moves are made. The East Division appears to be set about who is making the playoffs. However, there is much competition in between the two halves of the division. The only certainty is that the Buffalo Sabres will be last short of a miraculous surge over the next five weeks. (If one happens, then last week was the genesis of it.) To that end, here is what the East Division looks like this morning:

As I explained last week, hot streaks are not forever but they feel like it at points. The New York Islanders then had four straight wins. They close out this week with four more. As such, they remain in first place in the East Division. The Islanders are by no means secure in first in the East Division. However, they have a two-point lead as well as tiebreakers with a commanding lead in regulation wins (the first tiebreaker after games played) and regulation/overtime wins (the second tiebreaker). Outside of an injury to Anders Lee, it has been another excellent week for the Orange and Blue Crew of New York.

The hot streak. It is the opposite of the cold streak or slump. It is a run where a team just seems to do a lot of things right and get to that undefined point where it is hard to see when it will end. You know it will. Nothing gold can stay. But until then, it is a joy to watch the team succeed. New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres do not know this at the moment; they are slumping bad. But the New York Islanders faithful know it all too well. They swept their last week of games and now see their team atop the East. Yes, the Islanders now lead the East Division.

After postponements and re-scheduled games, all eight teams in the East Division played at least one game last week. The New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, and Philadelphia Flyers have all resumed play. This ended up with some very short weeks of games for some of the East Division teams, but getting everyone active again was important. It means a more compact schedule for the East in an already compact 56-game regular season. And it will be more apparent next week.
Despite the loss, the Boston Bruins remain atop the East Division standings in both points and point percentages. They will be heavily featured on national television this evening in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Perhaps they will show why they are not only first in the East but arguably among the best teams in the entire NHL. We shall see. But business will pick up from Sunday onward. Here are the standings ahead of today’s games:
