Who will save the 28,000 students who scored grade E in KCSE?

May 13th 2021 at 19:13:09 GMT +0300
In the backdrop of a global pandemic that cost jobs and lives and disrupted education and the economy , the  Kenyan press and social media has been awash with profiles and testimonies of KCSE candidates who floored the most challenging form four national exam ever held in Kenya.
The victors were celebrated and they deserve to bask in the afterglow of a triumphant run buoyed by good genes, fine teaching and, for the most part, grit.
And then there are 28,000 students who scored grade ‘E’. They cower faceless in the dark, their fate mentioned in hushed tones. Of these, 141 sat the exam in National schools, 85 in extra County schools, 1,501 in County, 18,239 in Sub-County and 8,080 in private schools.

Schools are facing a serious dilemma on how to discipline learners, as teachers and parents reject the use of the cane to punish errant students.
Opinion remains divided on the proposal by the Ministry of Education to reintroduce the cane banned in 2001, as some stakeholders say it may be the magic stick to restore good manners in schools.
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha last week hinted at a possible move to bring back the cane as cases of indiscipline increased in schools.

Since schools resumed physical learning a few weeks ago, several cases of indiscipline have been reported across the country.
A video clip circulating on social media showing a student attacking teachers is one of the many cases of indiscipline recorded recently.
The Form Three student in a school in Kisii was reportedly being punished for reporting late.
Another student from Mokwerero Secondary School in Nyamira County is said to have attacked the school’s deputy principal with a panga.

Schools are grappling with rising cases of indiscipline among learners, raising questions about the state of students’ mental health.
Ugly scenes of students attacking their teachers while tutors instill discipline are clear manifestation of the bad manners learners have picked.
Kenyans were in shock last week when a Form Three student in Kisii School allegedly attacked two teachers while being punished for missing evening studies.
