DOVER, Del. (AP) — Graduations are normally an occasion to celebrate, a time to recognize the years of hard work put in by students and to wish them luck in whatever is next. For the hundreds of new graduates, alumni, parents, officials and others present at Wesley College’s commencement last Saturday, it was an exciting and joyful day — but also a bittersweet one.
Founded in 1873, Wesley has been an integral component of Dover’s fabric for generations, with proud degree-holding members of the Wolverine family helping shape the community. Graduates were indeed the center of attention Saturday, but in some ways, the commencement was like no other held by the school before.

Meet Mickey Reece, the outsider filmmaker on the rise

Alerts
When a name appears in the credits of a film as often as Mickey Reece’s does in his own, your first impulse as a writer is to call him a “one-man band.” But he’s not—at least, not anymore. Before he was a self-taught filmmaker on the rise, this Oklahoma native was a touring musician, performing under the moniker El Paso Hot Button. Watching old YouTube clips of him playing a tambourine with one hand and his guitar with the other, left foot on a snare drum and right foot on the bass, it feels like a tidy visual metaphor for the life of a DIY artist. But the longer you talk to him, the more you realize that Mickey Reece resists neat classifications.

Christianity is a faith with a long and extensive history, with numerous events of lasting significance occurring throughout the ages.
Each week brings the anniversaries of impressive milestones, unforgettable tragedies, amazing triumphs, births, deaths, and everything in between.
Some of the events drawn from over 2 millennia of history might be familiar, while other happenings might be previously unknown.
Here are three things that happened this week, Jan. 17-23, in Church history. They include the birth of the “Mother of Methodism,” the issuing of the Edict of St. Germain, and the Parliament of England enacting the Book of Common Prayer.

Hope in the church continues through COVID-19
Impact of COVID-19 on churches
By DeAndria Turner | January 12, 2021 at 9:25 PM CST - Updated January 12 at 9:26 PM
LEIGHTON, Ala. (WAFF) - Many people, especially in the South, spend Sunday morning in church.
Churches across North Alabama made changes during the pandemic so people can continue to worship without gathering in a building.
Usually Pastor Wesley Thompson’s congregation at Bethel Colbert Missionary Baptist church fills the pews on Sunday mornings, but since the pandemic hit they’ve been doing things differently.
“God is not restrained to the four walls of this building. We’ve had parking lot service and guess what? God was present in this parking lot as much as God has been present in this sanctuary,” said Pastor Thompson.

Somerset man granted diversion in child abuse case

Gideon C. Wesley
A local man accused of abusing a child with autism was granted a pretrial diversion as part of a plea agreement reached Thursday in Pulaski Circuit Court.
Gideon Clay Wesley, 28, of Somerset, had originally been indicted last February on one count of first-degree Criminal Abuse (Child 12 or Under).
The charge stemmed from an investigation begun in November 2019 by Somerset Police after they were dispatched to Memorial School in reference to a student who had arrived with bruises.
According to his arrest citation, Wesley told authorities that the child had knocked a gun rack off the wall while they were at a residence. When the child didn't heed Wesley's request for him to get up, according to the citation, Wesley "grabbed him by the neck of his shirt and twisted the shirt, jerked him up and drug him approximately 20 feet down the hallway to place him in time out." At another point, Wesley grabbed the child's arm and tried to pick him up.
