The Shocking Rise in Coups - Day 2

As the Biden administration commits to revitalizing global democracy, the shocking rise in the number of recent coups demands an urgent response from the United States and its allies and partners. The number of coups and coup attempts in 2021 matches the highpoint for the 21st century. Despite what military juntas may claim, the current “epidemic of coups” — as U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called it — spreads instability, undermines democratic progress and human rights and is accelerating cycles of violence in countries wracked by conflict.

Building corridors of growth through the Sahel and beyond - Burkina Faso

Building corridors of growth through the Sahel and beyond

World Bank Practice Manager for the Environment, Natural Resources and the Blue Economy in West Africa
Temperatures in the Sahel are increasing 1.5 times faster than the global average, and around 80 percent of the farmland has lost some degree of its natural productivity. Together, these factors diminish the availability of land for food production or grazing, deplete water, and increase the vulnerability of the people living in the region.
Adding to these challenges, the COVID-19 pandemic could drive up to 40 million people into extreme poverty in sub-Saharan Africa, erasing five years of progress in fighting poverty. In the Sahel alone, over 17 million people are food insecure.

Remarks by World Bank Group President David Malpass at the One Planet Summit

Remarks by World Bank Group President David Malpass at the One Planet Summit
Email
President Macron, Secretary Guterres, Your Royal Highness, Excellencies.
I am very pleased to co-convene this year’s One Planet Summit, just as the World Bank Group did in 2017 in Paris, 2018 in New York, and 2019 in Nairobi.  Thank you, President Macron, for your leadership and commitment to the climate and biodiversity agenda.
Climate change and the loss of biodiversity are defining issues of our time.  They present critical challenges to our development efforts, including reducing poverty and inequality.
This year presents many opportunities for countries to align their biodiversity and climate goals with development programs, including COP15 in Kunming and COP26 in Glasgow in November.

Enhancing Smallholder Farmers' Access to Seed of Improved Legume Varieties Through Multi-stakeholder Platforms - Learning from the TLIII project Experiences in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia | Essegbemon Akpo

This open access book shares the experiences of Tropical Legumes III (TLIII) project in facilitating access to seed of improved legume varieties to smallholder farmers through innovation platforms. It highlights practices and guiding principles implemented in eight developing countries of sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. This book details key processes that respective teams employed to create an innovation space that delivers seed, other inputs, knowledge and financial services to agricultural communities and most importantly, the underserved farmers in remote areas of the drylands.
It offers valuable insights into the pathway to establishing, promoting and operating innovation platforms to enhance the performance and competitiveness of legume crops’ value chains, and addresses critical issues that must be considered to make innovation platforms more sustainable and attractive to beneficiaries. The book offers a wealth of practical insights for development workers, technical staff, and project managers. This publication is all about TLIII community of practice. It will definitely inspire other development workers and scientists to share their own experiences for others to learn from.
