The Memo: Biden faces first major setback as Tanden teeters

Her willingness to go after Republicans in strong terms on Twitter was always going to be a problem, the skeptics say, especially with the Senate split 50-50. Tanden has her fair share of enemies on the left as well. She is synonymous with the party’s Clintonite center-left and has at times been eager to pick fights online with supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders
Sanders, chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, has not said how he would vote on her nomination. He spoke with Tanden earlier this week to tell her that her hearing before his committee was being postponed.

House Democrats to keep minimum wage hike in COVID-19 relief bill for Friday vote

Democrats will then leave it up to the Senate to remove the provision when it reaches the upper chamber.

“House Democrats believe that the minimum wage hike is necessary. Therefore, this provision will remain in the American Rescue Plan on the floor tomorrow," Pelosi said. “Tomorrow, when we pass the American Rescue Plan, the American people will know that Help Is On The Way.”
Pelosi added that House Democrats are "determined to pursue every possible path in the Fight For 15" but didn't specify the other options.
The Senate parliamentarian ruled earlier Thursday night that the provision, which would increase the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2025, did not comply with arcane budget rules needed for it to pass under the process known as reconciliation.

Democrats hesitant to move on taxes amid pandemic

“We’ve been working on these issues for quite some time,” he said Wednesday. “The majority leader will make the decision specifically on what comes next, but he and the president know that I have tax proposals that we’re fine-tuning and honing in the Senate that are very much in sync with what the president has been talking about.”
“My approach to legislating is to not front-run my colleagues,” he said. “I think the broad kind of framework has been pretty clear. I think we have two tax systems in America. I want one that gives everybody a chance to get ahead.”

Black Caucus members lobby Biden to tap Shalanda Young for OMB head

Young, who already is Biden’s nominee to be deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), served for the past 14 years as a staffer on the powerful House Appropriations Committee, most recently in the top job of staff director.

And the CBC is preparing to send a letter to Biden endorsing Young for the job once that happens, sources said. People who work closely with her on the Appropriations panel describe her as a beloved staffer.
Young “would be more than qualified. She brings with her a wealth of information about the process. She also knows about the agencies and the issues,” Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.), a co-chair of Biden’s presidential campaign and part of the team that led his search for a vice presidential running mate, told The Hill.

Washington Post denounces abuse of reporter

“High on my own supply, that’s interesting. Should I ask her? My own supply of what? See that goes to show how much homework I still have to do on her if I didn’t even know that she had sent out a tweet about me," Murkowski replied after being shown the tweet.

Kim later posted some of the abuse that she had received via email due to the photo. One email she shared told her to “Go back to China bitch.” Kim is of Korean descent.

Kennedy apologizes for calling Haaland a 'whack job'

Kennedy called Haaland a “a neo-socialist, left-of-Lenin whack job” Wednesday in remarks to reporters. On Thursday he apologized in an interview with Politico.
“I apologize. I was searching for a word for extremist, which I think is more neutral,“ Kennedy told the publication. “And I should have said extremist. I never should have said whack job.“

The Louisiana senator’s apology comes shortly after Sen. Joe Manchin
“While we do not agree on every issue, she reaffirmed her strong commitment to bipartisanship, addressing the diverse needs of our country and maintaining our nation’s energy independence,” Manchin said in a statement Wednesday.

Grassley to vote against Tanden nomination

When asked if he’d support Tanden’s nomination, he simply told the Capitol press pool, “No.”
“I said 'no' and that's all I'm going to say,” he responded when pressed for a reason.

Grassley's office pointed to his remarks to the pool when asked for the senator's reasoning behind his opposition.
The Iowa senator is the latest in a mushrooming number of centrist Republicans to come out against Tanden, whose nomination is hanging by the thinnest of threads in the Senate.
She is facing broad rebukes over past tweets offering fiery criticism of senators on both sides of the aisle.
