FEMA eyes Milwaukee for potential federal vaccination site

FEMA is scouting possible locations to open a federal vaccination site in Wisconsin and state health officials said Thursday Milwaukee is a likely contender. Continuing Coverage: Coronavirus in Wisconsin"There is exploration of a federal site in Milwaukee and still planning and exploration calls going on about that," Julie Willems Van Dijk said, deputy secretary with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. The Biden administration has said it wants to open 100 sites across the country. "We continue to have conversations with them," Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said Thursday. "But one of the things I want to stress – our concerns are we want to make sure if there is a site that there's a supply that goes with it and financing that goes with it."Officials in Dane County are seeking a federal site as well. FEMA officials toured the proposed location at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison where county-run testing and vaccinations are already underway. "Ideally the federally resourced sites would get their vaccines directly from the federal government and not from the state allocation, and that would increase the overall amount of vaccines in the state," Ken Van Horn said, the emergency preparedness coordinator for Public Health Madison and Dane County. "That would be ideal. I’m not sure if anyone knows if that’s the actual case yet."Milwaukee officials wouldn't say where a proposed federal site w0uld go. The $23 million, 530-bed Alternative Care Facility built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the Wisconsin State Fair Expo Center closed earlier this month and is on standby for other uses.In a statement, FEMA said it is working with the state to determine how the federal government can support the vaccination efforts and currently assessing locations for potential sites.
