Perspective: The U.S. Supreme Court and ethical sleaze

Public officials at just about any level have to follow strict ethical guidelines: Rick Brooks says it's high time the Supreme Court joined them.

Perspective: Call Me Max

Jim Kline's Perspective -- April 12, 2021
The Eanes School District of Austin, Texas is in crisis mode. Letters have gone home, and counselors have been made available.
Thankfully, this did not result from a school shooting. Instead, counselors are ready to help fourth graders who may have been "traumatized" after listening to their teacher read an age-appropriate book -- Call Me Max -- about a transgender child.
As a parent, grandparent, former teacher and former youth services library clerk, I cannot understand the mindset of certain adults, who act as if explaining why people are different will result in psychological harm.

Perspective: The Grass Is Green

Rosie Klepper's Perspective -- April 6, 2021
It has been so pleasurable to see the mud-brown grass of winter give way to the lush, green grass of spring. The robins are also happy; pulling hard on their lunchtime worms. The only difficulty is that green grass grows. Regular haircuts are needed and if you receive some badly timed monsoons, it can be hard to coordinate cuttings, leading to a cowlick-y and unruly lawn. Such is the case with my yard. What started out as mild, short tufts of grass has progressed to full-fledged toupees and comb-overs. The grass is long and lank. When my beagle goes outside to take care of business, she wades into tummy tickling grass. Even Zoe thinks this is weird.

Perspective: Voter Suppression Is Oppression

Joseph Flynn's Perspective -- March 17, 2021
Recently, hundreds of new voting regulations have been proposed in state legislatures across the country, once again reigniting an old fight steeped in prejudice and racism.
Despite the declarations of Article 1 and the 14th, 15th, and 19th Amendments to the Constitution, keeping those rights has been a fight since 1865. During the Jim Crow era nefarious means disenfranchised African Americans: poll taxes, literacy tests, incarceration for petty offenses, and terrorism suppressed Black voters. Today we are dealing with thinly veiled practices like voter ID, closing polling places in minority communities and opening more in White communities, withholding water in long lines, withholding requested resources to hire poll workers, requiring ex-felons to pay thousands of dollars in fees, and purging voter rolls without notification, among other practices.

Perspective: The World We Give My Daughter

Josh Dettman's Perspective -- March 16, 2021
The time is nearing for my only daughter to leave the house and seek her fit into the world. My heavy lone concern is the health of our dear Mother Earth that we are giving her.
Our human modernization of technology and way of life have caused enormous irreversible damage to her long-term well-being. Evolution recites that only the strong survive and Mother Nature will wreak havoc on the weak -- deeming them susceptible to ever-changing environments upon her. If the wits of humanity proceed as they have with minimal caution, I fear the worst for our race.

Perspective: Serendipity

I recently happened upon one of my favorite words --
serendipity -- in an essay by Garnette Cadogan where he shares this definition, “a secular way of speaking of grace.” I associate this phenomenon with unintended but somehow focused luck. One of my serendipitous stumblings led me to the job that would be the highlight of my career and connect me to a lasting circle of friends.
Moving to the Fox Valley, I was looking for a librarian position and remembered visiting Fermilab. It had intrigued me so I called the head librarian. When he informed me there were no job openings, I was still interested in seeing their library and asked if I might visit.

Perspective: 'Playful' Bigotry

Until recently, I had never heard the term "playful bigotry." It was used by a writer commenting upon the death of a famous right wing radio personality.

Perspective: A School Of Fish

Chris Fink's Perspective -- March 11, 2021
My eyeglasses are like a school of fish that swim through the house. Just yesterday I knew their secret hiding places. Where are they today? It’s morning, and I have my coffee. Now it’s time to read something. No glasses. I yell out to the house, as my father did before me, Who stole my spectacles?! No answer. There is never any answer. My voice must spook the fish.

There are half a dozen glasses finning in the school, gathering and dispersing in random patterns. Cheap readers, these aren’t exotic neon tropicals. Still, they are attractive in their subdued, Midwestern way: a clear fish and a bluish fish, tortoiseshell fishes in myriad shades. Like the plecostomus, they hide from me in the dark corners of the aquarium. I look and look and look for them. Finally, they materialize in the laundry room, one on the washing machine, and another dangling lazily from the coat hook.

Perspective: The Impossible May Take A While

Rick Brooks' Perspective -- March 10, 2021
I woke up at 1:15 in the morning and reached for something boring to read so I could go back to sleep. It was a mistake.
The book I found was
The Impossible Will Take a Little While, edited by Paul Rogat Loeb.  Its subtitle was
Perseverance and Hope in Troubled Times.  And it was perfect…and imperfect.
Perfect because it had 52 short essays by people I have admired for years. Brilliant thinkers and writers like Alice Walker, Desmond Tutu, Diane Ackerman, Vaclav Havel and John Lewis. Arundhati Roy, and Bill McKibben.  One of the best pieces was by Parker Palmer, a former sociology professor at Beloit College.
