Aviatrix Jackie Cochran is the most fascinating woman you’ve never heard of
Cochran ‘was a huge force in aviation,’ space historian and author Amy Shira-Teitel says
Updated:
Tags:
Jacqueline Cochran was a record-breaking aviatrix, entrepreneur and political mover and shaker who was close enough with President Lyndon B. Johnson that he refused to let her call him Mr. President.
Yet Cochran’s legacy as the first woman to break the sound barrier in 1953 and her role in the Mercury 13 women astronaut testing program rarely gets a mention.
“I can’t believe I never heard of her,” Shira-Teitel said. “She led the women’s Air Force service pilots in the second World War, was the first woman to fly to the sound barrier, saved LBJ’s life one day, was friends with multiple presidents, was just a huge force in aviation, and held more records than any pilot male or female, the world over, when she died in 1980.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Tonika Brockman faced challenges climbing the corporate ladder. She overcame those challenges through education, getting creative and being client-centered.
Now, Brockman is Liberty Bank's Regional Vice President for all of Kansas and Missouri. It's a career she calls her purpose.
"I decided that I wanted to come to Liberty Bank last March at the height of the Black Lives Matter Movement. From a personal standpoint, it became very disheartening as I moved up in the ranks of banking and supported a more affluent clientele that there was no minority in my book of business," Brockman said.

ORLANDO, Fla. – When Ericka Dunlap was crowned Miss America in 2004, she didn’t realize it was a job she would have for the rest of her life.
“It’s a job for the rest of your life, I didn’t know that signing up for it,” said Dunlap. “But I’m grateful for it, because 17, 18 years later, I’m still able to make an impact on my community, I still have a platform, that’s really huge for me. I worked my entire life to get it, so I get to have it for the rest of my life and that’s a privilege.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — On the final day of Women's History Month, 41 Action News Today Anchor Rae Daniel sat down with a panel of Kansas City area women to discuss everything from equal pay in the workforce, to mental health, to nutrition and wellness.
Daniel spoke with Wendy Doyle, president/CEO of United. We; Chioma Atanmo, founder of Mindful Appetite and Dr. Pamela Taylor, owner of New Hope Counseling Center, as part of the 25 minute conversation.
One key topic was how critical it can be to simply get a good night's sleep.
"I know as women we look at rest and recharging as something like, 'I don't deserve this,' or 'I should be doing something else,'" Atanmo said during the discussion. "That to do list will always be there. Sleep is an opportunity for your body to rest and to know that it's okay."

(
ThyBlackMan.com) March Madness is beginning and it looks like college basketball fans will get to see NCAA Tournaments in both men’s and women’s basketball after both were canceled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. While powerhouse women’s college basketball programs like UConn, Stanford, and South Carolina are among the favorites to win the entire women’s NCAA Tournament, there are will likely be opportunities for teams like Michigan and Texas to make some noise and surprise some teams. The Texas Longhorns feature Charli Collier, who basketball fans might get to know for the next decade as the possibly number one overall pick in the 2021 WNBA Draft. Collier, who is a junior, recently declared for the 2021 WNBA draft. While that news might not be surprising for basketball fans who follow the NBA and see the amount of men who leave college after one year to pursue their NBA dreams, the WNBA’s rules about entering their draft are even stricter. It is time to ease the rules that do not allow talented female college basketball players to enter the most high-profile women’s sports league in America, the WNBA.

For a certain generation of women, director Susan Seidelman’s second feature, “Desperately Seeking Susan,” is a formative text, an indelible record of New York in the ‘80s, from Madonna’s iconic hair bow to Rosanna Arquette’s spirited performance as the lead. With its cast of New York underground habitués, and fizzy pace set to the tune of Madonna’s “Into the Groove,” “Desperately Seeking Susan” was a fashion-forward change of pace from the teen comedies and slick action fare of the time.
