Malay Mail editor-in-chief Wong Sai Wan dies at age 59


PETALING JAYA: Malay Mail editor-in-chief Datuk Wong Sai Wan has passed away. He was 59.
His son Wong Chee Mun told the Malay Mail he was admitted to the Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC) for heart-related issues on Friday (May 14) at 5.30am.
"He came into the hospital at 5.30am and was admitted to the emergency room at 6am. His heart stopped beating.
"They tried CPR on him but couldn't revive him," he said.
Star Media Group adviser Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, a former colleague of Sai Wan, said he was devastated to learn of his passing as they had recently spoken together.

Sai Wan's passing a great loss to journalism, says King


PETALING JAYA: Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has expressed condolences to the family of Malay Mail editor-in-chief Datuk Wong Sai Wan
(pix) over his death on Friday (May 14) morning, saying that it is a great loss to journalism.
“The Yang di-Pertuan Agong expresses condolences to the entire family of veteran journalist Wong who passed away this morning.
“His Majesty also expressed sadness with his passing and hoped that his family can remain calm and resilient in facing these challenges, ” said Istana Negara in a statement Friday.
The King also noted Wong's contributions to journalism since he started his career with The Star’s Negri Sembilan bureau in the 1980s.

In expressing his sadness and shock over Wong’s death, Dr Wee also offered his condolences to the family of the veteran journalist who had previously been with The Star for 29 years.
“He was Malay Mail’s editor-in-chief and The Star’s former Seremban bureau chief and executive editor.
“A longtime news media veteran and a true mentor to many of our current generation of journalists. He will be dearly missed by many.
“I want to wish his family strength and offer my condolences to them during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Wong, ” said Dr Wee, who is also MCA president.
